University of Greenwich has most satisfied students in London Sunday Times table shows University of Greenwich has most satisfied students in London Greenwich has scooped top spot in the London league table for student satisfaction, for the second year running. In the latest Sunday Times University Guide league table, published on 12 September, the university is ranked 26th for student satisfaction, out of 122 institutions in the UK, putting it ahead of all other universities … [+] in the capital. The results see Greenwich climbing nine places in the Sunday Times table for student satisfaction, compared with a year ago - meaning that it is now in the top quarter of all universities in the UK. The table is based on the National Student Survey, which asks all third-year students to rate their institutions on a variety of topics, from the quality of their teaching and equipment to their personal development. Greenwich topped the Sunday Times national league table for student satisfaction for some of its individual subject areas. Star performers were Civil, Chemical and other Engineering courses; Law; and Medical Science and Pharmacy, which were all rated as number one in the country for student satisfaction in these subjects. The Sunday Times says: "The most satisfied students [in the country] are studying medical science and pharmacy at the University of Greenwich." More than 96% of students studying in these areas said they were satisfied with their degree courses - which was the highest score in the whole of the UK, across any subject. Greenwich is also ranked as a national top five university for student satisfaction in Business, Management, Performing Arts and Tourism; in sixth place for Maths; and in the national top ten for Politics. The Sunday Times also places Greenwich in the top quarter of all UK universities when it comes to highest graduate starting salaries. Tessa Blackstone, Vice-Chancellor of the university, says: "This is an important vote of confidence from our students. These results show how important it is for us to listen to students' views and to act on them. Our ongoing challenge is to make sure that we continue to give every student a great experience of higher education at Greenwich". Maninder Singh, President of the Students' Union, says the university's high rating is well deserved. "The feedback I receive from students is really positive, not just in terms of the quality of teaching and facilities, but for the guidance and support throughout their time at Greenwich," he says. "Studying at the University of Greenwich has given me both international experience and a great degree! I know that I have a great career ahead of me thanks to the preparation that I have had at Greenwich.” Read about Ellen’s experience at ellengreenwich.wordpress.com

The College of Contemporary Health (CCH) is dedicated to training the large number of health care professionals needed to attend to health problems related to 21st Century lifestyles. These include obesity, mental illness, chronic pain, chronic fatigue syndrome and other similar health concerns. The governance of CCH rests with its board of directors who are suitably experienced to guide the institution. Similarly, oversight and direction for academic offerings, policies… [+] and approaches is provided by experts in obesity management and education through the members of the Academic Advisory Board (AAB). CCH has worked to fulfill a vision for combating contemporary health problems. Such contemporary health problems are debilitating to individuals and also have a significant impact on the social, cultural, economic and financial affairs of those individuals, their families and communities. Indeed, modern maladies such as obesity, diabetes, mental health, chronic fatigue, and other health concerns, have tipped the balance of wellbeing in society in the wrong direction. Our mission is to make the healthcare profession in the UK the most obesity literate in the world. To do this we draw on the available expertise, goodwill, and passion of stakeholders of the obesity epidemic and other contemporary health issues to significantly reduce the presence and effects of such threats to national wellbeing. At FutureLearn, we want to inspire learning for life. That’s why we offer a diverse selection of free, high quality online courses and content from some of the world’s leading universities and other outstanding cultural institutions. Our aim is to connect learners from all over the globe with high quality educators and with each other. We believe learning should be an enjoyable, social experience, with plenty of opportunities to discuss and reflect on what you’ve studi… [+] ed, in order to make fresh discoveries and form new ideas. Courses are delivered one step at a time and are accessible on mobile, tablet and desktop, so you can fit learning around your life, rather than your life around learning. We are a private company wholly owned by the Open University, with the benefit of over 40 years of their experience in distance learning and online education. Our partners include over 80 of the best UK and international universities, as well as institutions with a huge archive of cultural and educational material, including the British Council, the British Library, and the British Museum. Why it works FutureLearn offers you a powerful new way to learn online. Every course has been designed according to principles of effective learning, through storytelling, discussion, visible learning, and using community support to celebrate progress. Learning through storytelling Each partner university has designed a complete learning experience, presented by leading academics in their field. Rather than broadcast long classroom lectures, ideas are introduced via high quality videos and articles. You can then discuss what you’ve learned, testing your new knowledge with interactive quizzes that offer helpful responses and the opportunity to try again if an answer is wrong. Every course tells a story, step by step, with challenges and helpful tips along the way, to test and build your understanding. Discussion for learning We learn best when we share and debate ideas with fellow learners, to understand their different experiences and perspectives and to fill the gaps in our own knowledge. But not everyone likes being social, so rather than sending our learners off to separate discussion forums, you can add your comments alongside the content. You can start by reading what other people have to say about the topic, and then join in when you’re ready. If you particularly like a comment, you can choose to follow its author so that you can easily find the people and comments that are of the most interest to you. We’ll be building on these concepts of ‘discussion in context’ and ‘following’ over the coming months, so that social learning feels less like a forced conversation and more like a chat with friends about your ideas and what you’ve learned. Visible learning One way to enhance learning is to make the process visible, so that you know what is coming next, where you are in the course and how far you have come. The To Do list gives you an overview of the course, showing the activities for each week, and keeping a record of what you’ve completed. The profile page provides a summary of your own activity, including your courses and any comments you have made. We shall be extending these with further signposts for the course and indications of your progress. Community supported learning An intensive tutoring model can’t work for massive-scale free courses, so we need to offer online support without a large network of tutors. The solution is to harness the power of the community, where learners can make immediate use of their newly acquired skills by sharing their knowledge with their peers. Following other learners is part of a powerful system we are building that will allow you to acknowledge good contributions and promote people who offer helpful advice, and to develop your own reputation. In this way, success comes not just from passing an assignment and completing a course, but also from making a contribution to the FutureLearn community. Massive-scale social learning All these approaches need to work with huge numbers of learners, so that comments don’t just flash past, and reputations can be built over time. That’s why we decided to create a new massive-scale social learning platform, drawing on expertise from The Open University, BBC, social media designers, as well as our FutureLearn partners. It’s a new way of learning. Notes Visible learning is inspired by the work of John Hattie, to find out more, visit visible-learning.org. Our principles Ten principles that guide how we design and build FutureLearn. Open Wherever possible, we encourage our partners to make course content open and discoverable, to link out to the best of the web and take part in the online discussion. We strive to make course content accessible on as many devices as possible and to all visitors. We share our development process and the reasoning behind our business decisions via channels such as our blog. Listen to our learners Feedback from our learners is at the heart of our development process: both in terms of course content and features of the platform. We constantly iterate and improve based on feedback and observing how people are learning. We release features as quickly as possible and learn from how real people use them. And then we make them better. Tell stories Narrative is important. We want to inspire our learners to go on a journey and know where they are and where to go next. The narrative includes times to watch, listen and read, space for conversation, moments of quiet reflection and climaxes of assessment. We use storytelling to communicate ideas in fun and engaging ways. And we always let learners catch up. Provoke conversation Conversation happens in context and is integral to the learning experience. Social interactions are open by default to encourage vicarious learning and allow all to benefit from the discussion. We encourage everyone to be sociable because one of the best ways to learn is through talking with others. Embrace massive We seize the opportunities that a large number of people learning together affords: the specialist knowledge that exists in the group; the number of people online together at one time; the way ideas flow around a network; and how crowds can help surface the best content. And we learn from watching how a large group of learners behave. Create connections We encourage learners to make connections to provide mutual support, challenge their ideas and remove the loneliness of distance learning. We create spaces for small groups to come together and reach shared understandings. Keep it simple We try to avoid complexity wherever possible. We use down-to-earth language and make the experience as friendly and welcoming as we can, and encourage our partners to the same. We design for the common use cases. If a feature is useful but only to a few, we will resist the temptation to include it, in order to keep the platform easy to use by all. Learn from others We borrow from the best of broadcasting, games and social media to create an engaging and enjoyable learning experience. We draw on the vast knowledge and experience that exists in The Open University and among our consortium of partners, who will also share their wealth of experience as educators with each other, to create the best possible final product. Celebrate progress We motivate our learners by breaking the journey into small steps. Each step is bite-sized to make the learning visible, help learners see progress quickly and regularly reflect on what they have learnt. We celebrate every step of progress, both small and large. There is no such thing as dropout: we encourage learners to take from the experience as little or as much as they desire. Embrace FutureLearners We want to create a community of lifelong learners, and provide the stepping stones from one journey to the next. Our visitors are FutureLearners, not students of a particular university.

OUR HERITAGE The University of Westminster boasts a rich history and has been providing students with academic excellence, cultural engagement and personal enrichment since its inception as The Polytechnic Institution in 1838. Here you can find out a little bit more about our unique heritage, and the traditions of excellence that help to shape the University today. A place for pioneers The Westminster story began in 1838, when Sir George Cayley opened the Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street in London. In 1881, philanthropist Quintin Hogg, bought the Royal Polytechnic Institution building and moved his Young Men’s Christian Institute into 309 Regent Street, which soon became the publicly funded Regent Street Polytechnic. Since then, our education institution has secured a reputation as a place for firsts. These include: the first polytechnic in the UK (1838) the opening of the first public photographic portrait studio in Europe (1841) the venue for the first public moving picture show in the UK, organised by the Lumiere brothers (1896) organising the first marathon race (at the London Olympics) over the now traditional distance of 26 miles, 385 yards (1908) offering the first degree courses in Photographic Science, Photography, and Media Studies (1960s and 1970s) the first modern university to win the Queen’s Award for Enterprise – International Trade the UK’s first Partner University for UN Habitat, the agency which deals with human settlement and development. The Polytechnic Institution Established under the chairmanship of the distinguished scientist Sir George Cayley, The Polytechnic Institution at 309 Regent Street was created in order to demonstrate new technologies and inventions to the public and played a significant role in the popularisation of science. In 1841, the name changed to The Royal Polytechnic Institution when Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria, became Patron. The Regent Street Polytechnic During the 1860s, Quintin Hogg, a young business man, began to provide basic education for some of London's poorest children in the slums of Covent Garden. Hogg developed his vision to provide educational, social, sporting and social opportunities for young working men in The Young Men's Christian Institute. He purchased 309 Regent Street in 1882. New day and evening courses in technical and commercial subjects were introduced to support the expanding economy as London became the world's largest city. The Polytechnic became publicly funded in 1891 and was re-named the Regent Street Polytechnic. During the First and Second World Wars courses were directed towards the war effort, taking the lead in retraining the large numbers of disabled soldiers returning from war. Polytechnic of Central London (PCL) 1970-1992 The 1960s saw a major new expansion scheme for the Regent Street Polytechnic, transforming it into a multi-site institution. A new site in Marylebone Road was to house a college of architecture and advanced building technologies, while a second new site in New Cavendish Street was to house engineering and science. By the time the new buildings had been completed, the Regent Street Polytechnic had been merged with Holborn College of Law, Languages and Commerce to form the Polytechnic of Central London (known as PCL). The newly formed Students’ Union played host to several leading bands of the era, including Jimi Hendrix and Cream. Pink Floyd also formed at the Polytechnic at this time. PCL was one of 30 new polytechnics formed in 1970, awarding degrees from the Council of National Academic Awards. Throughout the next 20 years, PCL continued its commitment to part-time and evening education, and pioneered an extensive programme of short courses for mid-career professionals that attracted more than 20,000 students a year. University of Westminster 1992- the present PCL gained University status in 1992, bringing the right to award its own degrees and to participate in publicly funded research. Today’s University, with 22,000 students, is far bigger than its predecessors and is structured into four campuses – Cavendish, Harrow, Marylebone and Regent. Our expanding overseas activity has resulted in the University being awarded the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2000 and again in 2005.
