Introduction

Our Philosophy

The philosophy of The New England School of English is to provide the best in English language and culture training: to provide an intellectually challenging program of the highest quality in a warm and supportive environment. In short, our goal is to provide an extraordinary opportunity to learn English.

Why NESE?

Complete Linguistic and Cultural Immersion

At NESE, students learn more than just language; they learn American culture as well. Our students succeed rapidly because intensive English language training combined with complete cultural immersion has proven to maximize language learning. At NESE, students attend intensive classes during the day and have the opportunity to go home to an American family homestay or a dormitory in the evening. All day, every day, our intensive program exposes students to American language and culture, providing an opportunity for the fastest language learning possible.

Excellent Teachers

Because of its outstanding reputation, NESE attracts teachers who hold both undergraduate or advanced degrees from some of the top universities in the US, including Harvard, Yale, and Columbia. Regardless of where our teachers obtained their degrees, NESE teachers are dynamic professionals with exceptional teaching experience who have been selected to teach at NESE because of their high level of expertise and dedication.

Small Classes

Our average class size is 12 students. Small classes ensure lively discussions, frequent student participation, and intensive student-teacher interaction.

Intensive and Semi-Intensive Programs Five Days per Week

Students have a choice of participating in NESE's Intensive Program from 9:00-3:15 each day or in NESE's Semi-Intensive Program from 9:00-12:00 each day. Both programs offer 10 levels of language and culture training, full access to all NESE facilities, and a choice of either dormitory or homestay accommodation.

Elective and After-School Courses

In addition to our intensive academic classes, students can choose elective and after-school courses to help them reach their goals more rapidly. Elective and After-School Courses include TOEFL® Preparation, Business English, Legal English, Pronunciation, and University Preparation. NESE advanced students can also take courses in their area of particular interest at Harvard Extension School and other area colleges. (Please note that five students must register in order for a NESE After-School Course to take place.)

Official Transcripts and Certificates

At the end of every session, you will receive a NESE transcript that provides information about your English proficiency and academic achievement in each skill area. You will also receive a NESE Certificate of Attendance for participating in our program, and upon successful completion of NESE's most advanced level, you will be awarded the NESE Diploma. Additionally, if you achieve academic excellence, you will be recognized as being an "Honors Student". A notation of this will appear on your official NESE transcript.

An Ideal City, An Ideal University Setting

NESE is located adjacent to Harvard University in the center of Harvard Square in Cambridge. Harvard Square is a focal point of student activity and one of the most interesting and dynamic student centers in the United States. NESE is only 100 meters from the train and bus stations and 10 minutes from downtown Boston. We are also less than two hours away from great skiing, ocean sailing, and beautiful, historic Cape Cod.

Flexible Schedule

We offer intensive 4-week sessions beginning at 12 different times throughout the year. This means that you can start your English training at a time that best suits your schedule.

Advance Accommodation Arrangements

Throughout the year, students can choose to live in an American family homestay or in a dormitory. Because NESE makes all housing arrangements before students leave their own country, whether students choose to live in a homestay or in a dormitory, they can go directly from the airport to their new home. NESE charges no fee for making any housing arrangements.

A Program for Professionals

Because of the flexibility of the NESE curriculum, professionals can choose the classes they want to take. This is ideal for professionals whose work does not allow them to follow our intensive curriculum. In addition to our regular intensive program, private instruction and NESE elective courses are some of the options at NESE for professionals.

A Program for Students

Our intensive curriculum is specially designed to help students achieve their academic goals as rapidly as possible. In addition to our intensive classes, we offer a TOEFL® Preparation course, the Institutional TOEFL® exam each month, and a University Preparation course. We also offer extensive educational counseling and a university placement service, a university resource library to help students plan future studies in the United States, and admission into area universities without taking TOEFL®.

Free Counseling and Services

Our range of free services is extensive: pre-arrival housing placement, university counseling and placement, use of NESE computer facilities, unlimited use of NESE e-mail and the Internet, NESE transcripts and certificates, and counseling from our experienced representatives around the world.
