Our Approach

The Coursera experience It’s simple. Coursera wants to help students learn better — and faster. That’s why Coursera has designed a platform based on proven teaching methods verified by top researchers. Here are 4 key ideas that were influential in shaping our vision: Effectiveness of online learning Online learning plays a significant role in a lifelong education. In fact, a recent report by the U.S. Department of Education found that “classes with online learning (whether taught completely online or blended) on average produce stronger student learning outcomes than do classes with solely face-to-face instruction.” Mastery learning Based on an approach developed by educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom, Mastery Learning helps students fully understand a topic before moving onto a more advanced topic. Coursera typically gives immediate feedback on a concept a student did not understand. In many cases, Coursera provides randomized versions of the assignment so a student can re-study and re-attempt the homework. Peer assessments In many courses, the most meaningful assignments cannot be easily graded by a computer. That’s why Coursera uses peer assessments, where students can evaluate and provide feedback on each other’s work. This technique has been shown in many studies to result in accurate feedback for the student and a valuable learning experience for the grader. Blended learning Many of our partner institutions are using our online platform to provide their on-campus students with an improved learning experience. This blended model of learning has shown in studies to increase student engagement, attendance, and performance.

Course in Medical Neuroscience

Online Part time 13 weeks September 2018 USA USA Online

Medical Neuroscience explores the functional organization and neurophysiology of the human central nervous system, while providing a neurobiological framework for understanding human behavior. [+]

Medical Neuroscience explores the functional organization and neurophysiology of the human central nervous system while providing a neurobiological framework for understanding human behavior. In this course, you will discover the organization of the neural systems in the brain and spinal cord that mediate sensation, motivate bodily action, and integrate sensorimotor signals with memory, emotion and related faculties of cognition.

The overall goal of this course is to provide the foundation for understanding the impairments of sensation, action, and cognition that accompany injury, disease or dysfunction in the central nervous system.

The course will build upon the knowledge acquired through prior studies of cell and molecular biology, general physiology and human anatomy, as we focus primarily on the central nervous system. This online course is designed to include all of the core concepts in neurophysiology and clinical neuroanatomy that would be presented in most first-year neuroscience courses in schools of medicine. However, there are some topics (e.g., biological psychiatry) and several learning experiences (e.g., hands-on brain dissection) that we provide in the corresponding course offered in the Duke University School of Medicine on campus that we are not attempting to reproduce in Medical Neuroscience online.... The vital signs – heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, respiration rate, and pain – communicate important information about the physiological status of the human body. In this six-part course we explore the anatomy and physiology underlying the vital signs so that you will develop a systematic, integrated understanding of how the body functions. Relevant body systems are reviewed including cardiovascular and respiratory, followed by explanations of how the function of these systems affects vital signs. We discuss normal ranges, normal variants, and the mechanisms that underlie changes in the objective measurement of vital signs. The course also includes demonstrations of appropriate techniques for measuring vital signs in yourself and others.... [-]
