Rice University | Wiess School of Natural Sciences

MSc USA Houston September 2017

The Wiess School of Natural Sciences has always represented new frontiers for Rice University. Its roots date to 1912, the year of the birth of the Rice Institute. In fact, all of the Institute’s four founding departments — biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics — are still part of the Wiess School. The Wiess School’s namesake, Harry Carothers Wiess, was a Rice trustee, Houston philanthropist, and businessman who was acutely aware of the importance of science to both… [+] Rice and Houston’s success. Today, the Wiess School is still pioneering educational frontiers by incorporating research into more classes and undergraduate students into research laboratories. In the majority of Rice labs today, undergraduates can be found working side by side with faculty, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers to advance the boundaries of human understanding in astronomy, biochemistry, cell biology, chemistry, earth science, ecology, evolutionary biology, mathematics and physics. The Wiess School of Natural Sciences comprises six departments: Biosciences Chemistry Earth Science Kinesiology Mathematics Physics & Astronomy Natural Sciences faculty participate in several Interdisciplinary institutes and centers including the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Richard E. Smalley Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology, Rice Quantum Institute, the W.M. Keck Center for Interdisciplinary Bioscience Training, Gulf Coast Consortia, and Rice Space Institute. Research partnerships encompass local institutions including Baylor College of Medicine, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, NASA, The University of Texas Health Science Center, the University of Texas Medical Branch, and University of Houston, plus foundations, museums, industries, and other universities and corporations worldwide. The research of Nobel Laurates Robert Curl and Richard Smalley heralded the new discipline of nanoscience and technology that brings together many fields across science and engineering. In addition to providing the foundation of nano-research, the School also recently recruited three renowned scientists, all members of the National Academy of Sciences. Their research labs in cancer, physics, and chemistry will work in partnership with cancer specialists in the Texas Medical Center to apply new concepts from physics to cancer research and treatment. Members of our faculty have received prestigious awards such as: Packard Fellowships, Beckman Foundation Fellowships, NSF CAREER Awards for junior faculty, Feynman Prizes, Norman Hackerman awards in Chemistry, the Athelstan Spilhaus Award for Enhancement of the Public Understanding of Earth and Space Science, and the Public Welfare Medal from the National Academy of Science. The School offers numerous research opportunities to its undergraduates, and many publish work in top journals. A small sampling of research being conducted illustrates the broad range of possibilities: exotic plant and animal invasions into Texas ecosystems, evolutionary dynamics of genes and genomes in populations and species, effects of salt chemistry on freezing of saturated Martian soil, neurogenesis in Alzheimer’s Disease, and building lasers for cooling atoms to a millionth of a degree above absolute zero, to name a few. The space that supports Natural Sciences is remarkably diverse in the state-of-the-art equipment provided to the undergraduate and graduate research programs. The School also supports a professional science master's program in several areas. [-]

In 1915, during a slowdown in the building industry, Whiton conceived the idea of a Home Study Course in the Decorative Arts. As more and more home study students began to visit his professional office expecting to find a school, he decided to open one in 1916. He established the New York School of Interior Decoration. At the time, interior design was just beginning to take shape as a distinct and recognized profession—one that required training in everything from art history to the play of light on walls and other surfaces. In 1924, NYSID was chartered by the New York State Board of Regents. Since then, it has grown from a handful of students and a single course of study in its first year to more than 600 students and nine programs today. Whiton literally wrote the book on interior design education. His Elements of Interior Decoration was published in 1937 and is currently in its 6th edition, now titled Interior Design and Decoration. It is still a design school standard today. In 1951, the College’s name was changed to the New York School of Interior Design, recognizing that the education we provide doesn’t only concern itself with the details and finishes of a space but the architecture of the interior, everything that is not strictly structural. And by the time Jacqueline Kennedy was first lady—and first brought to national prominence the role of the interior designer with her renovation of the White House—we'd already been on the scene for four decades. In many ways, it's our firm foundation in the evolution of interior design's history that's allowed us to be its forerunner. In its early days NYSID was located in various buildings on Madison Avenue and in Midtown—the last, an impressive site on East 56th Street, was designed by architect and faculty member William Breger. NYSID eventually settled into its current location on East 70th Street in 1994, among the city's top fine art and antique dealers and renowned museums. A major expansion and renovation—to NYSID's tandem building on East 69th Street—followed in the late 1990s. And, in 2010, the College opened its LEED-Platinum Graduate Center on Park Avenue South and 28th Street, which houses faculty, staff and more than 150 graduate students. Today, we are firm believers in the importance of sustainability, in fostering the dialogue between the fields of interior design and architecture, and in the future of accreditation standards in education and licensing of practitioners in the interior design profession. Thanks to the efforts of our esteemed faculty—and equally esteemed graduates—good interior design is a paradigm for good, healthy, sustainable life on the planet. And the skills of its professionals are, more than ever, in demand. NYSID's Mission & Vision Mission Statement: New York School of Interior Design prepares aspiring interior designers and working professionals to be leaders in the field by providing a focused and immersive interior design education drawing upon expert faculty, innovative approaches, and close industry relationships. Vision Statement: New York School of Interior Design is a global leader in interior design education, impacting the profession through innovative curricula and strategic collaborations, with graduates placed in positions of influence around the world. Values New York School of Interior Design values: The quality of human life in the built environment The “spark” to be found within each student The rich history of the institution and the design profession The special opportunities afforded by NYSID’s NYC location A setting that fosters creative thinking, collaboration and collegiality among students, faculty & staff Small and focused learning environments, both digital and experiential The expertise and commitment of the faculty and staff Both conceptual and applied design Respect for the environment and sustainable practices A strong grounding in the liberal arts as an essential part of a designer’s education A foundation of respect for oneself, others, and the greater world Engagement with local and global communities [-]

Wartburg College

Bachelor USA Waverly September 2017

College is about more than just a degree. It is an investment in your future. The liberal arts education you will receive at Wartburg allows you to not only gain the skills required from your chosen field of study, but also the critical thinking skills required to explore the ethics of decision-making and community engagement, effective communication, cultural competence, and collaboration. Our Mission Wartburg College is dedicated to challenging and nurturing… [+] students for lives of leadership and service as a spirited expression of their faith and learning. Our Identity Wartburg College is a liberal arts college of the Lutheran Church (ELCA). You don’t have to be Lutheran, or even Christian, to appreciate the way a Wartburg education will help you discover meaning and purpose for your life. Many colleges work from a common creed or statement of belief where faith is imposed. Other colleges keep faith out of community life entirely. At Wartburg College, we use the Lutheran approach to education, which builds community around a lively and inclusive conversation of faith and learning. Martin Luther, who sparked the Reformation in 1517, was both a pastor and a university professor. He wrestled with the bigger questions of life and how faith could truly change the world around us. Because of our Lutheran theological perspective, we want you to also wrestle with these big questions as you work through your four years at Wartburg. We invite and encourage conversations with people of diverse backgrounds and with differing spiritual perspectives. In turn, you will learn more about your own beliefs and values. Discover Your Calling Wartburg College helps students discover and claim their callings—connecting their learning with faith and values, their understanding of themselves and their gifts, their perspective on life and the future, and the opportunities for participating in church, community, and the larger society in purposeful and meaningful ways. Named eight consecutive times to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, three times “with distinction,” in recognition of volunteer efforts by Wartburg students. One of only six Iowa colleges included in the 2014-15 Colleges of Distinction, which recognizes schools that have demonstrated their dedication to "engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities, and successful outcomes." Wartburg was ranked 16th in the nation for short-term study abroad in the 2014 Open Doors Report, conducted in partnership with the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Included in Washington Monthly's best liberal arts colleges ranking for its contribution to the public good through social mobility, research, and service. Ranked in the Princeton Review as one of the best colleges in the Midwest region. Listed in Peterson’s Top Colleges for Science among 200 schools with outstanding programs in science and mathematics. One of two colleges in Iowa to be nationally recognized by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education for its elementary-education program. Included among the first-tier Best National Liberal Arts Colleges as ranked by U.S. News and World Report. Ranked No. 7 among national universities and liberal arts colleges by U.S. News and World Report as an “overperformer” in graduation rates for students from low-income families. Included in Money Magazine's "best colleges" ranking. The Wartburg “Community Builders” program was awarded a MacJannet Prize for Global Citizenship. Graduate in four years! What is a Graduation Rate? This can be a very confusing concept. Basically, this is the percentage of students who actually complete a degree at the institution. Most reports online will show a 6-year graduation rate, which is the percentage of full-time students received their bachelor’s degree within six years, which has become the average length of an undergraduate education at many universities. This is NOT true at Wartburg College. 93% of our graduates finished their degrees in four years. Of the full-time students who started at Wartburg, 63% will complete their degree at Wartburg, which is considered a very high graduation rate. In the past 10 years, Wartburg has had graduation rates as high as 70%. Why compare five years at state schools to four years at Wartburg? The reality for many students is it will take four-and-a-half to five years or more to earn a degree at a state school, according to national statistics. At Wartburg, 93 percent of our graduates complete their degree in four years. [-]
