Master in Genomics

Based on established capacity and the tremendous potential for expanding genomics research at the University of Pretoria, the University has identified Genomics as one of its new Institutional Research Themes (IRTs). The field of Genomics and with it, all associated fields of the Life Sciences have over the past decade been revolutionized by the high-throughput analysis of microbial, plant and animal genomes, powered in large part by the integration of engineering, biology and computer science. Questions that were previously considered intractable to the scientific investigation can now be addressed at unprecedented levels of detail and scope. Importantly, "post-genomics" fields such as transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and population genomics have unlocked the biological functions encoded in genomes and are now forming the basis for innovation and application of genomics information in Agriculture and Health Sciences.... All the departments involved have established research programmes with a focus on the elimination of malaria and the promotion of health. Since the research groups in various faculties share the aim of combating malaria effectively without risk to human health, it was strategic to combine all research conducted in this field in a research theme in order to create new opportunities for postgraduate students and to guide policymakers on this issue.

The vision of the Centre is to make a substantial contribution towards ridding Africa of the endemic scourge of malaria by:... [-]
