The School of Engineering is active in traditional fields of Engineering, as well as in emerging and unique areas at national level. It is characterised by a strong research component, the excellence of its teaching projects, internationalisation and interaction with society. It is supported by a faculty of more than 300 doctorate professors, approximately 400 researchers and a staff of more than 90 technical and administrative employees. These are internationally recognised centres thanks to the various awards attributed to professors and researchers of the School of Engineering and to important research partnerships with national and international universities. The collaboration with MIT, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Texas at Austin, under the Portugal_MIT and Portugal_CMU / AT programmes, is also noteworthy. Thanks to International Mobility programmes such as Erasmus Mundus, teaching projects have a very high demand at national and international levels. The University of Minho - School of Economics and Management - PhD Programmes EEG offers 8 undergraduate degree courses, of which 4 are taught in post-labour regime; 16 Master Programmes and 6 Doctoral Programmes, of which 3 are jointly offered along with other higher education institutions. BRIEF HISTORY EU THE University of Évora It was the second university to be established in Portugal. After the founding of the University of Coimbra in 1537, it has been felt the need for another university to serve the South. Évora, ecclesiastical metropolis and temporary residence of the Court, emerged immediately as the most suitable city. Although the original idea of the creation of the second University Kingdom, have belonged to John III, was given by Cardinal Henry its embodiment. Interested in educational issues, she began by founding the College of the Holy Spirit, entrusting him to the then newly founded Society of Jesus. The prestige of the University of Évora during the two centuries of its existence first phase confused with the prestige and the scientific value of its teachers. To it they were linked relevant names in Portuguese and Spanish culture, which is important to emphasize, first and foremost, Luis de Molina, theologian and moralist of creativity and European renown. In Évora, PhD was another luminary of the Iberian culture of that time, the Jesuit Francisco Suárez, then a professor at the University of Coimbra. Here taught for a while Pedro da Fonseca, considered the most important philosopher Portuguese sixteenth century, celebrated the effort of neo-scholastic renovation of Aristotelian thought. Despite the attempts of modernization and openness to new scientific spirit that characterize the eighteenth-century university, it must be acknowledged, however, that the example of his elder sister of Coimbra, his efforts did not translate into actual opening of minds to the needs of new times. Despite the high individual value of many teachers, the education system as a whole, proved misfit and outdated. Évora participated thus the global trend of turning back to Transpirenaica Europe that characterized the majority of elites and Iberian cultural institutions of the Old Regime. When the political and cultural climate of the mid-eighteenth century began to reveal hostile to the Jesuits, no wonder that the University of Évora has been easily become a target of the reform and centralist policy of Pombal. On February 8, 1759 - two hundred years after the foundation - the University was surrounded by cavalry troops, as a result of the decree of expulsion and banishment of the Jesuits. After a long time in prison under arms, the masters were eventually taken to Lisbon, where many were imprisoned in the notorious Fort Junqueira. Others were summarily deported to the Papal States. From the second half of the nineteenth century, settled in the noble building Henrique's the Lyceum of Évora, to which the Queen Dona Maria II granted the prerogative of the use of "cloak and cassock", in keeping with university tradition of the city and the building . The School of Health Sciences is a recent organic unit of the University of Minho, created to ensure graduate and postgraduate education, research and other specialized services within the Health Sciences domain. Founded in 2000, the School of Health Sciences (ECS) aims to train doctors and other health professionals throughout life. The ECS offers a Medical Degree, which has an innovative curriculum design. This curriculum that covers all the major topics in Medicine, follows… [+] a bio-psycho-social integrated perspective, according to the recommendations of the majority of National and International medical education committees. The School also ensures postgraduate education and training in the area of Health Sciences and Medicine, as well as, a program of advanced courses, bearing in mind a lifelong training, but also allowing the accumulation of credits for obtaining a formal degree. To fulfill its mission, the ECS has highly motivated and qualified faculty, currently consisting of about 80 members, of whom 50% are PhDs and 70% are doctors, all of whom are researchers in the school’s research institute Life and Health Sciences Research Institute -ICVS). The ECS integrates a research institute (ICVS) that encompasses 3 main research Domains (Neurosciences, Surgical Sciences and Microbiology and Infection) with more than 200 researchers, and has published over 1000 papers in international peer-reviewed journals of relevant impact factor since 2003 (the year it was created). Given the changes in its legal framework, the statutes are in a recast. The School began operations in October 1974 with the General Nursing Course, which ran until 1992. The School of Nursing of the University of Minho (ESE-UM) is an organic unit of teaching and research of polytechnic nature, which ensures graduate and postgraduate education, research and other specialized services within nursing. The school is a structure with its own agencies and personnel, through which the University makes a statement of its mission, in the nursing knowledge area and related fields, with special emphasis on dimensions of teaching and research. The School of Nursing of the University of Minho is a national and international reference in the Teaching of Nursing. It received the Award of Honor for Excellence in Education in 2006, awarded by the Ibero-American Council in Honor of Educational Quality. In 2013 the ODAEE (Organización de las Américas para la Excelencia Educativa) will also award the ESE-UM with the Sapientia Award for the Educational Excellence). The present ESE-UM Dean, Professor Maria Isabel Lage, was also awarded in 2013 by the same organization, ODAEE, with a Medal for her excellent Quality Education Management. The School of Sciences of the University of Minho, created in 1975, has evolved into a well-established institution enjoying a good reputation in quality of teaching and research in the domains of Exact and Natural Sciences. The School integrates five departments (Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Applications, and Physics) with a total of 191 teaching staff of whom 184 are qualified to a PhD degree level. The undergraduate population of the School is of… [+] about 1200 students, distributed between twelve undergraduate degree courses and also approximately 436 postgraduate students (enrolled at both master and doctorate levels). Introductory courses in basic sciences are also provided as a service to other schools (Engineering, Economics, Psychology, etc) of the University of Minho. The University of Minho is a split-site university with installations located in Braga and Guimarães, two neighbouring cities 20 km apart. The School of Sciences is established in both camps of the University, however, the school administration services and the main installations of the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Mathematics and Applications and Physics are located in Braga, on the Campus of Gualtar. The research laboratories, staff and secretarial offices, are also installed on this site. The research activities of the school are carried out within research centres located in each department. During the last few years, the School of Sciences has extended its facilities into the Campus of Azurém, in Guimiarães, where one can also find teaching and research installations of the Departments of Mathematics and Applications, Chemistry and Physics. The Departments of the School of Sciences have high-quality laboratories, equipped with advanced instrumentation assuring graduated and post-graduate training in experimental sciences, awarding master and PhD degrees and providing a first training in experimental sciences and providing conditions for the development of advanced research projects. GOS – Management of Social Organizations, is the result of a partnership that AESE and ENTRAJUDA established in order to provide management training to the leaders of social institutions. Participants see the GOS as an opportunity to reflect upon the efficient use of the scarce resources that institutions have at their disposal, to develop a strategy more tailored to their objectives and to motivate the personnel of the institution.
