Two of these are intended for holders of a Bachelor’s degree: the MSc in the Health Sciences (a two-year full-time programme that offers specialisations in Epidemiology, Clinical Epidemiology, Genetic Epidemiology, and Public Health) and the MSc in Clinical Research. The third programme is intended for Master’s graduates and health professionals at postgraduate level. This is the MSc in Health Sciences, which is offered as a one-year full-time programme or a two-year part-time programme. THE ERASMUS SUMMER PROGRAMME Each of these three programmes combines theoretical and practical research training in medicine and the health sciences. The programmes start every August with the Erasmus Summer Programme. This three-week, 30-course portfolio of state-of-the-art biomedical topics is designed to fully satisfy the needs of international students and professionals with a specific interest – such as clinical medicine, general practice, public health, epidemiology, genetics or biostatistics. The Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences started on 1 January 2007. The faculty was the result of a merger between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Faculty of Medicine. Medicine The Faculty of Medicine was the first faculty to be established at Maastricht University. The University was officially established on the 9th of January 1976, although the first medical students began their studies in September 1974. The other faculties of Maastricht University, i.e. Arts and Culture, Economics and Business Administration, General Sciences, Health Sciences, Law, and Psychology adopted educational systems and research organisations akin to that of the Faculty of Medicine. The Faculty developed into a community with a staff of around 1200 (academics, administrative and support staff), and approximately 1950 medical students. Since 1992 staff and students are based at the complex of buildings of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, Faculty of Psychology, and the University Hospital (Academisch Ziekenhuis Maastricht) which opened in 1991. Health Sciences The Faculty of Health Sciences offered a broad range of disciplines that made the faculty unique, not only in the Netherlands, but also in Europe. In Wageningen, the academic year is split up into six periods. During each period, you follow one or two courses that are completed with an exam. The first, second and third period, and the fourth, fifth and sixth period run parallel to the European semesters, which means you can combine your courses in Wageningen with courses at other universities without running into scheduling problems. The first year of the Master study programme is comprised of mandatory courses, but you also have several elective courses which allow you to specialise within your programme. The second year includes an internship and a master thesis. The subject of the thesis is developed in consultation with a senior staff member of Wageningen University.
