Simulation Based Engineering / Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Simulation based engineering is the consistent use of simulation throughout the product development process - from initial analysis of the first concept ideas to the continuous review and improvement of product properties in various stages of development until the optimization of machine processing or other alternative studies. The use of FEM (finite element method) or CFD (computational fluid dynamics) began several years ago, especially in the aerospace sector, the automotive industry and in civil engineering, so nowadays the methods have been established in almost all industrial sectors as well as in other applications such as medicine. Current methods make it possible to simulate entire systems and to examine complete products in realistic high-pressure scenarios in advance. Simulations help us gain a holistic understanding of the product and answer a key question: Can the product fulfill what it promised to the customer?

Fresenius University of Applied Sciences From its main campus in Idstein near Wiesbaden, the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences can look back on more than 167 years of tradition in the teaching of the sciences. In 1848 Carl Remigius Fresenius founded the Fresenius Chemical Laboratory, which has devoted itself from the very beginning to practical laboratory work as well as education. Certification as a privately sponsored, state-approved university of applied sciences… [+] followed in 1971.Today, the university offers full-time and part-time Bachelor's and Master’s degrees as well as vocational training and further education at its headquarters in Idstein and its campuses in Cologne, Hamburg, Munich, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin and New York. Courses are allocated to different faculties: Chemistry & Biology, Health & Social, Economics & Media and Design. However, this purely market-oriented communication measure has absolutely no influence on the legal framework of the Fresenius University of Applied Sciences. The schools are not a substitute for the faculties, but enable the university’s marketing department not only to present the study courses, which have strongly grown in number over recent years, in the market in a more transparent and focused manner, but also to better meet the needs of prospective and existing students. In this respect, all the university’s legally stipulated committees and their organisation in the different faculties will continue to retain their relevance and validity in future.

Today, Goethe University is one of the only universities in Germany that enjoys significant public funding alongside administrative autonomy and the ability to create a private endowment. As a university with an endowment, a funding model rare in Germany’s system of higher education, GU enjoys considerable freedom from state control when it comes to the details of how a modern university should be run, including the appointing of professors. The endowment that is being built up will be invested specifically in promoting an excellent atmosphere in which to research, study, think, and create. Goethe Goes Global - Master Scholarships Available Now A very good example for this support from the citizens of Frankfurt is the “Goethe Goes Global” scholarship programme. Thanks to the support of Johanna-Quandt-Foundation, Goethe University Frankfurt is now offering scholarships for all its master programmes with special emphasis on research (check drop down menu on your right). The “Goethe Goes Global” scholarship programme is a ground¬breaking project and unique in the academic landscape of Germany. We are seeking outstanding candidates who are interested in joining one of our MA or MSc programmes which are embedded deeply within our strongest research units (e.g Centers of Excellence, collaborative research centers, and LOEWE CENTERS). If your primary motivation is research, come and join our highly international research community! Key Figures at Goethe University (2016) • More than 47,000 students enrolled • About 7,000 international students • An international profile: Many newly appointed professors from abroad as for us it is quality that counts not nationality • Third party funding • In a large student survey, about 80% of students recommended studying at Goethe University. The city Situated in Germany’s most cosmopolitan and international city, the university attracts a diverse body of students and researchers from around the world. Students at Goethe benefit from studying and living in Frankfurt, the largest financial and trading centre in Europe—with plenty of opportunities to learn and practice speaking German. Today, Frankfurt is rated among the top 10 most livable cities in the world (according to Mercer Human Resource Consulting). Goethe University was founded in 1914 Goethe University was founded in 1914 as a unique “citizens’ university,” financed by wealthy citizens in Frankfurt, Germany. Named in 1932 after one of the city’s most famous natives, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, today the university has over 38,000 students. Looking at the timeline of Goethe University’s history, it is clear that the last decade has produced significant changes for the university—and that there is a clear forward momentum. Once considered a liberal or left-leaning institution, Goethe University is perhaps best known as the birthplace of the influential Frankfurt School, part of the Institute for Social Research—which spawned some of Europe’s leading thinkers of the 20thcentury (including, for example, Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Jürgen Habermas, Herbert Marcuse, Hans-Georg Gadamer, Martin Buber, and Paul Tillich). Because of racial and political tensions during the Nazi era, close to one-third of the university’s academic staff were dismissed during this period—more than at any other German university. Goethe University also played a major role in the student protests of 1968 that led to widespread educational reforms in Germany and across Europe. Goethe University has maintained its reputation in the social sciences In recent years, Goethe University has maintained its reputation in the social sciences, but added important new facilities and research institutes in the natural sciences as well as law, history, languages, humanities, the arts, and economics. Its “clusters of excellence”, interdisciplinary research centres, have helped to sharpen the university’s academic profile, achieving outstanding results in diverse areas ranging from natural sciences (“Macromolecular Complexes”) to medicine (“Cardio-Pulmonray System”, a cluster of excellence in collaboration with the University of Giessen and the Max-Planck-Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, which conducts cutting edge research for novel therapy of heart and lung diseases) and humanities and social sciences (“The Formation of Normative Orders”). Srongly committed to supporting young researchers Goethe University is strongly committed to supporting young researchers by offering outstanding opportunities to earn a doctoral degree. At many universities, researchers have to choose between earning a PhD the “traditional” way in Germany, or as part of a “structured” PhD programme. At Goethe University, all doctoral candidates are eligible to apply to become members in the Goethe Graduate Academy (GRADE) and access unique training and networking opportunities that are the hallmark of more structured programmes. Finally, one should mention the university’s ambitious “think tanks”: the newly founded Frankfurt Institute for Advanced Studies (FIAS) and the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, which sees itself as a laboratory for innovative knowledge in society. The university was also a forerunner in the “Bologna Process” that helped to ease student mobility in and out of over 40 European countries by standardising degree structures. Starting in 2005, Goethe University began offering the first master’s programmes and the switch from the traditional German Diplom or Magister to the bachelor’s and master’s system will be complete in the winter semester 2011/12. Today, Goethe University offers many individual courses and degree programmes in English, another major shift. Four master’s programmes in economics are taught entirely in English, another one is a bilingual (German and English) programme. Many master’s programmes in the natural sciences can also be studied without a comprehensive knowledge of the German language, and doctoral studies in a wide variety of fields can also often be undertaken in English. First major university in Germany to become a foundation university In 2001, the university was the first major university in Germany to become a foundation university, meaning that the state of Hessen would still provide funding to cover most of the annual budget but the university would be able to establish a private endowment and enjoy full administrative autonomy in matters such as faculty appointments. Goethe University now has a robust alumni association and has raised €145.5 millions (feste Zusagen mit eingerechnet) and created more than 50 new endowed and visiting professorships—an important re-affirmation of the university’s identity as a “citizens’ university”. The state of Hessen is investing a total of €1.2 billion to help create a true campus environment in Frankfurt with three distinct locations: Campus Westend for the humanities and social sciences, Campus Riedberg for natural sciences, and Campus Niederrad for medicine. The former main campus Bockenheim, which dates from the founding days of the university, will no longer be in use once the new building is complete.

Programs to fit your passions Winterline Global Education offers skills-based gap, semester and summer programs for young adults with an adventurous spirit and an interest in the world around them. You will learn real-world skills to prepare you for college, life and career while traveling the world and exploring your passions. Produce a documentary film. Launch a business. Learn to scuba dive. Build a tiny house. Practice authentic Thai massage. These are just a few… [+] of the experiences you could have on our programs. Do something new. Learn by doing. Prepare for life. Welcome to Winterline Global Education! We are a unique and innovative global gap, semester and summer program organization, offering high school graduates and young adults the opportunity to step out of the ‘rush to and through college’ and explore what they really want to do with their lives. We believe that high school graduates are much better prepared for college – and for a career – when they take the time to explore and pursue a wide variety of possible interest and skills. What specific skills will students learn on the program? Winterline Global Education introduces students to a wide diversity of skills – but all of them very practical. Students learn life skills such as cooking, care giving and personal money management; job skills such as customer service and negotiation; communication skills such as effective public speaking and the making of digital media presentations. These are just a few examples of the core competencies students will learn while on the program. Here is a more detailed listing. How is the Winterline Global Skills Program different from other “gap" programs? Most “gap” or “bridge” year programs offer students the opportunity to volunteer in another country, or to “get to know themselves better” and “make a difference in the world.” As praise-worthy as these efforts are, at Winterline we feel that in order for young adults to actually offer something, they need to have the skills to do so. A gap experience is an extremely valuable time when students can lay a foundation for a successful college experience by gaining a diverse set of skills and being introduced to a wide range of job and career options. Add to this the value of international travel and exposure to global issues and concerns, and you have a program unlike any other. How will this program better prepare young adults for college or university? The Winterline Global Skills Programs offer very practical life and career building skills. They are not “college prep” programs offering coaching in academic subject areas, yet by giving students a chance to explore their interests, gain skills and consider career options, they enter college or university with a much clearer sense of direction and purpose. They know what they want to get out of life and they know how to get there. additional support and guidance in the college application and decision-making process. Are there any prerequisites to joining your program? There are no specific prerequisites to joining a Winterline Global Skills Program besides an inquisitive mind, a “can do” attitude, and a willingness to take risks, make mistakes, and grow through the process. Students are expected to be physically fit and flexible enough to meet the stresses and demands of traveling in the developing world. Do you have an age requirement? Applicants must be between 18 and 22 years of age as of Sept. 1, 2016.

Georg-August-Universität Göttingen Founded in 1737, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen is a research university of international renown with strong focuses in research-led teaching. The University is distinguished by the rich diversity of its subject spectrum particularly in the humanities, its excellent facilities for the pursuit of scientific research, and the outstanding quality of the areas that define its profile. From 2007 to 2012 Georg-August-Universität Gött… [+] ingen was rewarded funding from the Initiative of Excellence of the German Federal and State Governments with its institutional strategy for the future entitled “Göttingen.Tradition – Innovation – Autonomy”. The University was able to realise all measures of the concept. Now Göttingen University develops the successfully established measures further to continously advance the University’s positive developments in research and teaching. A University with Tradition The University bears the name of its founder Georg August, King George II of Great Britain, Elector and Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, (Hannover). In affinity with the spirit of the Enlightenment, Göttingen abandoned the supremacy of theology and set its faculties on an equal footing. As an academic location Göttingen was long regarded as the hub of the mathematical world – a position lost, however, in 1933 when under Nazi rule more than 50 professors and lecturers were forced to leave the University, among them several of the 44 Nobel laureates whose names are associated with the city. After the end of World War II, Göttingen University was the first in Germany to resume its teaching operations and it went on to become one the largest higher education institutions in the country. University as a Foundation Intensifying the process of internationalisation, promoting excellence in research and teaching, adopting Bachelor’s and Master’s degree structures, giving all levels of the University greater autonomy and self-responsibility, optimising resource allocation: These steps characterise the reforms recently undertaken at the University. At the beginning of 2003, the Georg-August-Universität became the first German university with a comprehensive range of disciplines to assume the legal status of a foundation under public law. The University has since then enhanced its research profile, created new research entities such as the Courant Research Centres and the Lichtenberg-Kolleg, intensified cooperation on the Göttingen Campus, attracted and retained outstanding academics and supported the recruitment of excellent students and young academics from abroad. Göttingen Campus The University of Göttingen regards its great research tradition and subject diversity as constituting particular strengths. Almost all academic disciplines including medicine are represented in the 13 faculties, the exception being engineering sciences. The Georg-August Universität is also distinguished by being closely integrated into a network of first-class extra-university research establishments involving, most prominently, the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, the German Primate Center, the German Aerospace Center and five Max Planck Institutes. Together, these local partners create with the University an alliance for collaboration in research and teaching arguably unique in the Federal Republic in terms of its depth and breadth. Successful elements of which include jointly run collaborative research centres, junior research groups and infrastructure facilities, as well as combined professorial appointments. This cooperation has recently bred outstanding research centres that have won funding from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry for Education and Research. Within the scope of the Excellence Initiative ,the promotion of the Excellence Cluster „Nanoscale Microscopy and Molecular Physiology of the Brain (CNMPB)“ and the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences; Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) will be continued in the second programm phase. Due to the positive effect on student instruction and the fostering of young researchers emanating from the neuro- and biosciences in Göttingen, these research focus areas, cultivated together with the University’s institutional partners on the Göttingen campus, play an important part in shaping its profile. Research excellence at international level is also displayed in chemistry, physics of condensed matter and optics, biodiversity and ecology, geobiology and pure mathematics, as well as in German language and literature studies, oriental and ancient world studies, and theology. As a result of the integration process of the local research community, possibilities specific to Göttingen have arisen for the attracting and retaining of excellent researchers from both in and outside Germany, and top-quality research activities have been initiated and developed. Likewise, the advancement of exceptionally talented young scholars and scientists is a central strategic aim at the Georg-August-Universität. Studying with Excellence Göttingen has many advantages as a location for university studies which the Georg-August-Universität is enhancing by developing innovative degree programmes, Bachelor’s and Master’s degree structures, carrying out a systematic internationalisation of its study programmes and implementing quality-assurance measures. Approximately 30 000 young people currently study here, some eleven per cent of whom are from abroad – a clear demonstration of the pull that the University has long exerted internationally. The range of degree courses on offer stands out both for the outstandingly good study facilities in the natural and life sciences and for the breadth of subject diversity in the humanities and social sciences, a choice found at only a small number of universities in Germany. Such a spectrum of subjects enables overarching issues to be tackled with an interdisciplinary perspective, even at undergraduate level. With 80 subjects to choose from, some 1,000 combinations are possible on the way to graduation with a Bachelor’s degree. In its constantly expanding range of Master’s and Ph.D. programmes the University cultivates excellence and offers the proximity to research. Study programmes run in English, bi-national degrees and compulsory periods spent abroad prepare graduates for the international job market. The University of Göttingen’s international position is being further strengthened by the expansion of partnerships. In addition to the close complex of European universities within the framework of the Erasmus Programme, numerous cooperations at University, faculty and institute level facilitate study visits throughout the world, in some case also making scholarships available. In 2011 the University of Göttingen was successful with its proposals to further improve the quality of studies and teaching within the framework of the “Quality in Teaching Pact“ of the German federal and state governments. Since then, Göttingen University has been expanding the academic programmes it offers and further optimising the quality of study conditions. These measures will be developed in cooperation with students. Fostering the Scientists and Scholars of Tomorrow Doctoral training in Göttingen is concentrated in structured programmes based at four Graduate Schools: Georg August University School of Science (GAUSS) – Göttinger Graduiertenschule Gesellschaftswissenschaften (GGG) – Graduiertenschule für Geisteswissenschaften Göttingen (GSGG) – Graduate School Forest and Agricultural Sciences (GFA) (see: www.graduiertenschulen.uni-goettingen.de). The four Graduate Schools provide the organisational superstructure for the research training groups, doctoral programmes and International Max-Planck Research Schools. The aim of these schools is to optimise the research- and learning-conditions for doctoral candidates, offering intensive supervision and a range of seminars designed to advance the training of first-class scientists and scholars. The Göttingen Graduate School of Neuroscience, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences, which operates under the roof of the Georg August University School of Science (GAUSS), gets funds within the Excellence Initiative since 2007. Funded by the German Research Foundation, Research Training Groups (GRK) are set up for a limited period with the aim of promoting young researchers and preparing them for their doctorate. At the International Max Planck Research Schools, the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft in collaboration with partners at the University is engaged in fostering young scientists and offers especially gifted students from Germany and abroad the opportunity to obtain a doctorate of special distinction. A World-Class University Library The founding of the Göttingen University Library in 1734 was a landmark: For the first time in library history the concept of a modern research library was put into practice and the institution became the first comprehensive academic library of European standing. Today, the Göttingen State and University Library of Lower Saxony (Niedersächsische Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Göttingen, SUB) continues to hold a pole position. With over 7.8 million medial units, it is currently one of Germany´s largest libraries. The holdings include 5.8 million volumes, 1.5 million microforms, 31,000 electronic magazines under licence, 316,000 maps, 14,000 periodicals in print form, 14,000 manuscripts, more than 3,100 incunabula, 395 bequests and a host of digital items. In addition, there are another 138 independent branch libraries at the institutes and departments. A digital library competence centre of worldwide renown, the SUB directs or participates in numerous research and development projects in this domain.
