The mission of the Nordic Institute for Advanced Training in Occupational Health is set by the . The acronym NIVA originates from the Swedish language title Nordiska Institutionen för Vidareutbildning inom Arbetsmiljöområdet. NIVA gathers top experts and knowledge from the Nordic countries and transforms research findings into advanced courses and seminars within the field of occupational health and safety for researchers and practitioners from both the Nordic countries an… [+] d world-wide. Our Story NIVA was founded in 1982 in Helsinki, Finland in conjunction with the Finnish Institute for Occupational Health (FIOH). Already at the time there was a strong belief in the importance of discussing common Nordic occupational health and safety matters and in the power of gathering Nordic experts within the field. NIVA has been an active player in the field of occupational health and safety education for over 30 years. During this time, over 12 500 experts and specialists from over 40 countries have attended and networked in NIVA. Some 25 % of the attendees come from countries outside of the Nordics. Today, NIVA is the only institute in Europe that solely focuses on an international and advanced level of occupational education – course participants are accepted regardless of where in the world they come from. Our Philosophy We rely on our extensive network of occupational health and safety specialists throughout research institutions and organizations primarily in the Nordic countries but also from other places in the world. We believe in the power of networking and people meeting each other. The feedback we get from both attendees and lecturers gives us reason to carry on with the winning concept of offering a platform to meet and exchange ideas. In general our courses take place in the Nordic capitals (with some exceptions) and last 2-3 days providing hard core substance information and offering excellent networking opportunities. In the year 2017 we have launched our first on-line course and we are excited to see where this new endeavor will take us.

Teaching Philosophy Pedagogy within Novia, has its foundation in a constructive outlook- we give emphasis on an independent and lifetime learning. A student takes his/her own responsibility for learning and ardently seeking knowledge that is crucial in accomplishing the goals within a particular study programme. ‘Learning by Doing’ is the motto and forms the basis for the pedagogical practice at the Novia University of Applied Sciences. The aim is to train practitioners and for that purpose it is thus appropriate, to use practical methods of teaching. Depending on the nature of the course, the teacher decides which method as a whole would be most suitable. Methodologies could range from project-based learning, by solving a problem, by sharing examples from one’s experience, following case-studies as well as by traditional means. In reality, while teaching and/or training students, in all forms of pedagogical methods that we use a student stands in the centre, be it lecturing, mentoring or writing exams. The students are taught through group-assignments and/or study circles etc. At times, students also work in study groups under the supervision of a teacher or a professional mentor from an organisation.
