Good news for the doctor shortage: medical school applications are up!

According to the latest data from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), over 10,000 more applicants than ten years ago sought admission to a US med school during the 2018-2019 school year -- an approximate 25 percent.

US News interviewed Dr. Robert Hasty, founding dean, and chief academic officer of the Idaho College of Osteopathic Medicine, who said more young people want to make a positive impact in their world.

He said, "The current millennial generation, their desire to serve and give back is really incredible." He explained that Generation Z, on the cusp of the application process, also shows a strong interest in public service.

Hasty also said that the demand for a medical education is "near an all-time high."

He added, "People really want to become physicians, and now more than ever. I would say this is especially true of the millennial generation. And I can tell you that, here at [our school], we hear from high-quality applicants everyday. [...] and these are people with really high MCAT scores and GPAs, that this is their second year, third year or even fourth year applying to medical schools. And years ago, they would have gotten accepted the first time through, but the demand is just incredible."

Hasty also explained that the US high schools and colleges are doing a great job engaging students in science classes and STEM careers, which accounts for some of the uptick.

Though the path to medical school is a tough one, the demand is incredible. So keep studying and keep at it!
