Introduction
The major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an interdisciplinary major at the interface of biology and chemistry designed to prepare students for careers in biochemistry and molecular biology, and in the related fields of cell biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, or in the health sciences.
As part of their training, students in the program conduct research with a biology or chemistry faculty member.

The Program
The major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an interdisciplinary major at the interface of biology and chemistry designed to prepare students for careers in biochemistry and molecular biology, and in the related fields of cell biology, microbiology, molecular genetics, or in the health sciences.
Students who intend to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology must file an “intent to major” form with the secretary of the departments of Biology and Chemistry at the time they declare their major. This form must be signed by the student and a program advisor.

Students graduating with a major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will:
- Master content in biochemistry and molecular biology by:
- Quantitatively and qualitatively analyze the transformation and utilization of energy at the molecular level in biological systems.
- Use chemical concepts to describe the structure and function of biological macromolecules.
- Analyze the storage and flow of information at the molecular level in biological systems.
- Correctly use methods to analyze the properties and functions of biological macromolecules and biological systems at the molecular level using instrumentation, laboratory techniques, statistics, or computational methods.
- Use information and ideas from the scientific literature to devise, explain, or defend scientific arguments.
- Independently conduct and interpret scientific research.
- Use written and oral communication to explain scientific arguments, and relay the conclusions about these arguments that are drawn from described experimental evidence.
