Asian Studies is the interdisciplinary study of Asia – its people and cultures, its policy and history, its language and art, and more. UMBC offers a major, a minor, and a certificate program in Asian Studies, allowing students a flexible way to incorporate Asian Studies into their overall plans. Students combine classwork in a variety of disciplines and advanced language study in Chinese, Hindi, Korean, or Japanese. Our students are excellent candidates for a variety of prestigious scholarships and internships which will allow them to apply their linguistic and cultural knowledge to opportunities around the world.

Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies

The minor is open to students with a major in any discipline. Reflecting the reality that modern astronomy is really a subfield of physics, there are 4 initial core physics courses which are required (totaling 14 credits). These are to be followed by a number of optional courses which can be taken to make up the required 9 total astrophysics credits. Note that senior research (PHYS 499) with one of the faculty in astrophysics (see here) may count towards the minor, for a maximum of 3 total credits (subject to department approval). Interested students may wish to compare with the physics minor offered by the department; in a sense the Astrophysics minor is a more restrictive version of the physics minor and only one of the two will be granted (one cannot get both a physics and an astrophysics minor).

The Bachelor’s of Science (B.S.) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (under the auspices of the Biological Sciences and the Chemistry and Biochemistry departments) offers students a unique interdisciplinary curriculum and exposure to a wide range of faculty members. With a curriculum drawing from both disciplines, as well as specific biochemistry courses, the program provides a broad background in the physical and life sciences. It is suitable for students planning careers in laboratory research or further training in graduate, medical, or other biomedical professional programs, such as medicine, dentistry, and medical technology.

The Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Software Engineering is a four-course program designed for professionals who desire to enhance their understanding of the latest software engineering methodologies, techniques, tools, and processes.

Certificate in Software Engineering

A minimum of 30 credit hours are required for all three pathways (thesis, project or course-only). Each students works with the their advisor to select the courses to meet the degree requirements and prepare them for their professional career. All students must satisfy the GPA and course requirements for their field of specialty within five years of admission.

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering

The Engineering Management Program teaches you the skills you need to move up the management track in an engineering or technology company. This graduate program emphasizes the essential leadership, business, and management skills required to effectively manage and lead people and complex projects in a technical company. It is ideal for someone who is entering their first leadership role or aspires to move into management. Although not required for participating in this program, it is expected that students are, or intend to be, employed in a technology-oriented enterprise or government organization.

Environmental engineers in the department are actively researching the fate and impact of pharmaceuticals in wastewater, analysis and remediation of toxic pollutants in soils and other environments, the processes governing atmospheric chemistry and aerosol pollution, and advanced real-time modeling and monitoring of groundwater-surface water conditions.

Master of Science in Information Systems

The M.S. program focuses on providing students advanced training in the fundamental sciences and technology of Mechanical Engineering to enable them to pursue careers in applied research and development in government laboratories or advanced technology firms. The M.S. degree can also be a stepping-stone to the Ph.D. degree. Generally, the M.S. degree can be earned in three to four semesters full-time, or pursued on a part-time basis.
