Postgraduate of Epidemiology

For whom is this program?

The program is open to professionals, PhD candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. Candidates are graduates holding a master's diploma in a biomedical field. Experience in medicine, biomedical sciences, or public health is required. Bear in mind that this program requires a half-time commitment.

The program seeks to provide the basic and advanced skills and competencies to design and conduct epidemiological research. In contrast to the master's in epidemiology, the postgraduate program does not include a dissertation.

Attention: if you are here with a student visa, you are required by law to take a minimum of 54 credits per academic year! However the postgraduate is a part-time only programme (30 ECTS).

Credits: 60 ECTS

The compulsory core courses account for 45 ECTS credits and the elective courses for a minimum of 15 ECTS credits (and are arranged into three blocks: methodological courses, specialized topics in sub-domains in epidemiology, and public health)

The students should take at least one elective course from the methodological or the public health block. It is allowed to choose elective courses from all three blocks.

Learning outcomes

• The postgraduate has insight into the determinants of health and public health at local and international levels.
• The postgraduate has insight into the basics of epidemiology and public health, is familiar with the main developments in epidemiology, and learns how to perform empirical research on socially relevant and complex problems related to health and healthcare at an individual and population level.
• The postgraduate makes an independent specific contribution to high-quality and relevant epidemiological research in a multidisciplinary context (computer scientists, statisticians, health economists, policymakers, and healthcare workers, among others).
• The postgraduate has a command of relevant software for epidemiological research and analysis.
• The postgraduate translates a health problem into a scientific research question, writes a scientifically sound research proposal, and draws up a detailed data collection, management, and analysis plan.
• The postgraduate aims to contribute to a sustainable improvement of local and global health care, disease surveillance, and prevention.
• Using epidemiological expertise, the postgraduate contributes to translating research results into policy and practice in an interprofessional context.

After completing a master's program, you can take a postgraduate program to further expand or develop your competencies.

The goal of following such a program is often to continue professional development. Postgraduate programs can be created when there is a specific need for them in the professional field.

After completing a postgraduate program you will receive a certificate rather than a degree. This certificate will give your CV added value to the labor market.
