This course provides students with thorough training in current clinically-used biomaterials and state-of-the-art research. Graduates will have gained knowledge and skills in the areas of specific materials design and testing for clinical application.

Course description

The MSc in Biomaterials provides you with thorough training in current clinically used biomaterials and state of the art advances in these in research. The clinical application module will cover generations of biomaterials in orthopaedics and cardiovascular. In addition, it will aim to give an introduction to foreign body reactions to these materials. You will also be trained on advanced biomaterials including nanomaterials, natural materials and soft matter. Further, we will also introduce techniques associated with the translation of research from the lab to the clinic. Additionally, there will be a 5 months long project component which will give you hands-on training on the development and testing of novel biomaterials. This MSc is the ideal preparation for a career either in the industry as a biomaterial scientist, or for cutting-edge academic research.

Teaching and learning

The course is delivered through a mix of lecturing, blended small and small group tutorials with hands-on research training.

We use a range of teaching and learning methods, including tutorials, workshops, seminars and research projects. These are supported by an e-learning infrastructure that includes online feedback, lecture and lab podcasting and close academic supervision.

Course unit details

The MSc in Biomaterials will provide students with the opportunity to increase knowledge and skills in the areas of specific materials design and testing for clinical application. Students will have the opportunity to take 120 taught credits with training in state of the art biomaterials design (ceramics, polymers, composites, hydrogels etc with information relating to the biological assessment of these materials (e.g. stem cell response, ISO / FDA regulations). Students also have the opportunity to gain 90 credits through a specific research project where they will gain analytical skills and data processing skills relevant to biomaterials design/use.

Our graduates of this programme have gone on to fill key posts as materials scientists, engineers, managers and consultants in academia, industry and research and development. You may also be able to advance to PhD programmes within the School.
