About NYU Steinhardt

NYU Steinhardt's one-of-a-kind integration of education, health, the arts, and media studies puts us at the heart of a movement: education for social change.

Steinhardt students are passionate about helping others.

Our mission is to advance knowledge, creativity, and innovation at the crossroads of culture, education, and human development. We exemplify NYU’s commitment to be of public service.

Our academic programs are ranked among the country's best.

NYU Steinhardt's master's programs in applied psychology, education, health, media, music and performing arts professions, and the arts and arts professions attract recent college graduates, established professionals seeking licensure or certification, and career changers. Our curriculum gives our students the opportunity to study abroad and experience hands-on learning.

Advanced certificate programs allow you to pursue study in specialized areas of applied psychology, education, music and performing arts, and physical therapy.

We also offer PhD programs that prepare graduates for careers in academic research and teaching, as well as professional doctoral programs for advanced practice in education fields, the arts, occupational therapy, and physical therapy.

We're redefining holistic education.

Our students belong to a strong and supportive community of scholars – a warm, nurturing environment that encourages the exploration of new ideas. Our faculty lead in their professional fields and collaborate across academic disciplines: teachers working with psychologists and health professionals, musicians with speech pathologists, educators with visual artists. They work with students to research topics like the effects of immigration on learning, childhood nutrition, and obesity, and how digital media is transforming social relationships. Our research institutes impact scholarship and policies around the globe.

At Steinhardt, learning takes place in and out of the classroom.

For more than a century, we’ve been building partnerships in our community: with local schools, families, community agencies, arts organizations, cultural institutions, and healthcare facilities. A Steinhardt education consists of rigorous classroom study as well as interning at New York City’s top media companies, clinical placements at renowned hospitals, or student teaching in one of the world’s most diverse school systems. It means unrivaled opportunities for professional training and career advancement.

We prepare you to lead in a global society.

Like the city, we call home, our faculty, students, and staff represents an extensive range of backgrounds, viewpoints, and perspectives. And though our roots go deep in New York, our work at home is influencing – and influenced by – our connections abroad. Every day, Steinhardt graduates continue to change the world.

School Timeline

Founded in 1890 as the School of Pedagogy, NYU Steinhardt was the first professional school devoted to teacher education to be established at an American university. The School's early mission was to educate school administrators and prepare men and women for work in colleges of teacher education. By 1921, the School was educating teachers at all levels and across all fields, including the arts and health, offering undergraduate through doctoral degrees. As the education field expanded, the School broadened its focus to incorporate new knowledge and scientific developments, and new programs emerged.

We are committed to a holistic understanding of human development across the lifespan and address the full range of the human experience with more than 150 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral degrees and more than 20 advanced certificates and artist diplomas. Across 11 departments and 13 research centers and institutes, our collaborative innovation and spirit provide students and faculty unique, interdisciplinary opportunities.

NYU Steinhardt welcomes applications from international students for admission to our graduate programs – in fact, nearly a quarter of our incoming graduate students are international! Be sure to keep in mind your special requirements as you prepare your application.

Our one-of-a-kind integration of education, communication, health, and the arts puts us at the heart of education for social change. Whether you’re researching for future graduate study, embarking on your doctorate, or anywhere in between, we have a program that will help you make an impact.

When completing your graduate application, please be sure to use your full, legal name as it appears on your passport. The use of any other names, such as nicknames, will cause serious delays in applying for your US visa. All international applicants must have an international address as their permanent address. The US government mandates that you include a permanent, international address to receive your visa.

Once you are admitted, you will apply for an I-20 to receive an F1 student visa with your acceptance package. You need financial documentation when applying for a visa, but financial documents should not be submitted with your application for admission. Please be prepared to pay additional fees for processing your I-20 from NYU and your student visa from the US government.

If you’re currently in the US at another school or recently completed your program at another US school and need to transfer your immigration record to NYU, please review the Office of Global Services' instructions to transfer to NYU.

Heightened security measures may result in delays in processing your I-20 and your student visa requests. Please apply for these credentials as soon as possible as it may take up to 8 weeks to process your documents. Use overnight and express mail wherever possible.

Jorge Santiago (MA ’13), Instructional Designer for McGraw-Hill Education

"The most rewarding part about being an Instructional Designer is that I get the opportunity to build meaningful learning experiences that impact learners. I work with an international team across multiple time zones, I get to make decisions that affect teachers and student learning in the classroom, and I am constantly learning and applying new ways of building learning experiences for both teachers and students."

      Letisha Smith '17

"My exposure to reform efforts in … school environments allowed me to recognize that the most effective policies were backed by data. Therefore, I decided to get my master’s degree in applied statistics at NYU Steinhardt because of the program’s focus on social science research."

Julia Lammer, MA Visual Arts Administration, 2014

It is amazing how the VAA program enables you to learn from and connect with leading practitioners in the field and actively engage in the cultural landscape of New York City.

      Edna Otuomagie

Edna Otuomagie came to NYU with the purpose of studying global media and its impact on international perspectives on race and ethnicity. While at MCC, she has had the opportunity to study the transnational circulation of global entertainment, black feminist theory, the politics of memory, different methodological approaches to analyzing race and ethnicity around the world, among a variety of other interesting and diverse topics. After graduation, Edna hopes to obtain a job working in the editorial department of a global entertainment media company, telling diverse stories of minority populations from around the world.

      Melissa Murphy Spooner

I think my studies at NYU relate to my current position in a variety of ways. In the broadest sense, my ability to understand globalization from an educational perspective is helpful in an environment that tends to view it strictly from a business standpoint. More specifically, the classes related to study abroad and cross-cultural awareness prepared me for the task of navigating the different interests of our students, faculty, business contacts, and travel agencies. I’m also better equipped to help student participants identify the tangible and intangible benefits of traveling abroad with their peers.

      Toya Hall

My most influential experience in the IE program was building relationships with faculty, staff, and fellow colleagues. The bonds I established and cultivated allowed me to take advance of NYU sponsored opportunities, both domestically and internationally. Through these networks, I was able to gain insight into various perspectives in IE, strengthen my leadership skills, and develop my interest in diversity efforts in our field. These connections I formed will transcend my graduate career and I am grateful for this.

      Frederikke Jensenius Reinhardt, MA '19

If you think about it, food is tightly intertwined with some of the major challenges we’re facing in this day in age. Food Studies gave me the tools to address those complex issues by examining food from a multitude of perspectives. The most rewarding aspect has been meeting all of the inspiring people in my program: from professors to guest lecturers and from activists to fellow students. I have family all over the world now.

      Marissa Nicole Leiner '14

The opportunity to study at NYU in the ECE program provides me with great satisfaction that I can pursue my passion for both teaching and the environment. I learn from and collaborate with world-class professors, as well as my peers, who inspire me with their passion, experiences, and hopes for the future. The ECE program allows me to customize my learning experience with classes that pertain to my specific interests; no two ECE-er’s take the same path within the program.

      Hana Takebe '14

Before coming to New York City, I worked as a middle school teacher in Japan where I taught Integrated Studies and English. At NYU I learned about environmental education resources and programs in urban areas and how to bring this knowledge and ideas back to Japan. I am especially interested in how schools can utilize non-formal education resources effectively. NYU has provided me with numerous opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills in this field.

Sai Varadan - Visual Arts teacher Renaissance High School for Musical Theater and the Arts (Bronx, NY)

My time at the NYU Steinhardt Art Education program was BUSY! The program is rigorous, resourceful, and creative! You will create a massive amount of art, learn educational strategies, and cultivate lifelong friendships and colleagues within the NY Art Community and beyond.

Rhea Creado - Children's Museum of Manhattan

It wasn’t until I began this Master's program that I realized that my thinking prior had been so “inside the box”. The program challenged me personally, it encouraged me to really push boundaries in terms of thinking about social change, and it broadened my research interests.

      Jessica Fertig

"This program provided me with the tools necessary to fine-tune the way I think about the art-making process, craft how I interact and relate to others and sharpen my intuition and analytical mind."

      Annie Greene Bonz

"I think the most important part of my experience in the graduate Art Therapy program was my interaction with faculty; their knowledge, encouragement and support pushed me to figure out the best way I can utilize my skills."

Yen-Wei Chen, Master of Arts for Physical Therapists

The master's program at NYU provided me with the foundation for logical thinking skills and physical therapy research. The knowledgeable faculty, rich resources, and high-end facility create an excellent learning environment. This program inspired me to apply to NYU's Ph.D. program and pursue a research career.

Elaine Borja-Jaffe, Doctor of Physical Therapy

I knew exactly what I wanted - small classes, prestigious faculty, top contacts, affiliations with the top hospitals - and at NYU I got exactly that...and more. The facilities were fantastic. The professors themselves actually cared about our progress and learning and didn't mind going the extra mile to help us out whether it be studying or personal guidance. I never felt like I was just a number. I always knew that I was a needed member of my class community. I also believe that encouragement and personal attention would be a necessary component in my education and that's exactly what I got. I have been told by my peers and colleagues that they are impressed by my thorough knowledge, professionalism, and skills. I wholeheartedly think that going to NYU was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
