Introduction
Our best defence against disease isn’t a new therapy, wonder drug or technological miracle. It’s knowledge. With our MSc Clinical Biochemistry degree, you will gain the technical skills and in-depth understanding to explore, harness and add to that knowledge.
It’s a masters course that offers both a theoretical understanding of clinical biochemistry concepts, together with the practical techniques to apply those theories in research – equipping you for practice at the specialist level.
You’ll study a range of modules, taking a systematic approach to disorders, developing expert analytical techniques and exploring the essential concepts around general, specialist and diagnostic clinical biochemistry.
Throughout this clinical biochemistry master's, you will have the support of an expert team and access to specialist laboratory facilities. Our virtual learning environment provides access to your personalised timetable, course and assessment information, and library resources. This means essential materials are at your fingertips when you need them, allowing you to work flexibly at your own pace.
Features and Benefits
- Industry standards – Recognised for our expertise, the course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science.
- Learn alongside leading researchers – We’re ranked 15th in the UK for the power of our health and biomedical research (REF, 2021). From microbiology and musculoskeletal science to vascular biology and sports medicine, the pioneering research of our department has led to important advances in diagnosis and care.
- Professional study environment – We’ve invested over £115 million to transform the way we teach and the way we learn. Our new Dalton building features dynamic learning spaces and world-class teaching and research facilities, including a cutting-edge Superlab and collaborative study zones. This means you’ll graduate with the skills and experiences employers look for.
- Athena SWAN award – Manchester Met’s commitment to promoting and advancing gender equality in STEM subjects has been recognised with a Bronze Athena SWAN award.
- Professional connections – Our strong links with the Institute of Biomedical Science, the Health and Care Professions Council, the NHS trusts and hospitals in Manchester and the North West offer you the chance to undertake research projects in clinically relevant areas.
- Cutting-edge facilities – You’ll learn in our modern laboratories for blood biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, and tissue culture. These facilities are home to an array of specialist equipment such as clinical chemistry and lipid profile analysers, and Luminex and proteomics equipment for the measurement of biomarkers in biological fluids.

Curriculum
Course information
On our MSc Clinical Biochemistry, you’ll study a total of six modules based on various aspects of clinical biochemistry over the course of one year.
You’ll cover essential concepts relevant to the practice of modern clinical biochemistry, enabling you to develop a systematic understanding and critical awareness of current practice. You’ll look at taking a systematic approach to disorders and the analytical techniques and recent advances in biomedical science, including specialist and diagnostic approaches vital in the clinical environment.
Our Research
We represent one of the highest concentrations of health research excellence, ranking 15th in the UK for the power of our health and biomedical research (REF 2021).
Our research is targeted at alleviating the threats of infectious disease, cardiovascular disease stroke and age-related decline to human health and wellbeing. We recognise that a fundamental understanding of how biology and biological interactions contribute to these disease conditions will inform clinical application and policy change to benefit human health and well-being. Our research stretches through prokaryote microbiology, through eukaryote cell, tissue and organ biology to clinical science and human population studies.
