Introduction
As part of this course, you’ll:
- Learn to help people of all ages to manage pain and dysfunction
- Study the core areas of neuromusculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological physiotherapy
- Practise thinking independently and problem-solving in a clinical capacity
- Gain comprehensive hands-on experience through diverse clinical practice placements
- Complete a minimum of 1,000 hours of supervised clinical placement experience that could include the NHS, sports clubs, schools and private clinics.
Professional regulation
This course is accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and approved by the Health & Care Professions Council and will provide you with the necessary expertise and skills to become a qualified physiotherapist.

Curriculum
Teaching And Learning
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through several modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.
Year 1 - Core Modules
What you'll learn
Foundations of Physiotherapy
Start to develop key physiotherapy skills including communication, note-keeping, critical thinking, and reflection on clinical and academic performance. You'll undertake related mandatory training covering some of the different settings of healthcare delivery.
Foundations of Physiotherapy Taster Placement
Undertake a one-week (37.5 hours) taster placement with pass/fail marking. This placement must be passed to complete the Foundations of Therapy module successfully.
Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
This module will introduce you to the related anatomy, physiology, skills, and knowledge needed to work effectively with clients presenting with a range of musculoskeletal problems. Develop theoretical and practical skills in the assessment and management of various musculoskeletal conditions using case studies to prepare for clinical experience.
Neurological Physiotherapy
Gain an overview of neurological physiotherapy. Identify the underlying relevant principles of rehabilitation and learn about assessment and treatment ideas for the uni- and multi-disciplinary team.
Cardiovascular Respiratory Physiotherapy
Start to develop the skills and knowledge needed to work effectively with clients presenting with a range of cardiovascular or respiratory problems. Develop the theoretical and practical skills of assessment and management for these client groups using case studies to prepare for clinical experience.
Research Foundations
Study research design including qualitative, quantitative, and review methodologies. Begin to develop the knowledge foundation for planning and proposing a research study relevant to the scope or breadth of physiotherapy practice.
Clinical Rehabilitation
Explore the skills needed to critically justify and apply evidence-based clinical rehabilitation in a wide range of settings. Learn how to work with a diverse range of patient groups.

Developing Clinical Practice
Synthesize your knowledge and skills, integrating course content with your learning in clinical practice placements. Strengthen your critical reflective practice to support your development as an effective practitioner and learner. Enhance your understanding of the care and management of complex patients, developing the master's-level skills and knowledge necessary for a career in healthcare as a clinician.
Clinical Placement 1 Jan/Feb

In the theory-practice transfer, apply, integrate, and build upon your knowledge, skills, and physiotherapeutic techniques, health promotion, and client empowerment. Develop a deeper understanding of the care and management of patients. Complete a minimum of 225 clinical-based practice hours during this placement.
Clinical Placement 2 May/June

Research Project
Conduct a master’s-level research project and disseminate the findings. Carry out an independent research project based on a research proposal from the Research Foundations module. Studies typically require a successful application for research ethics followed by data collection and analysis. Write up the results of your study in a dissertation report and defend it at a viva voce with a research poster. Receive support from one-to-one or small-group research supervision.

Gain insight into the role of a physiotherapist working in sport and recreation. Develop practical skills in the assessment and management of common sporting injuries and trauma scenarios. Review evidence-based assessment methods for the athletic population.
Shaping Healthcare - Management of Long-term Conditions
Review contemporary physiotherapeutic modalities and advancements in care, with a focus on the use of technology and advances in scientific knowledge. Develop additional skills related to the management and treatment of cohorts from emerging communities.
Program Outcome
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate competence as autonomous reflective learners and physiotherapy practitioners with excellent communication skills.
- Use varied approaches, including digital technologies, to identify, select and critically apply information to enable an evidence-informed approach to physiotherapy practice.
- Critically evaluate existing knowledge through the use of effective research strategies and initiate, conduct and disseminate research findings that further develop the physiotherapy and healthcare professions.
- Demonstrate skills of assessment, application and evaluation in the holistic management of individuals from diverse and multicultural backgrounds to plan, implement and evaluate physiotherapeutic interventions that are safe, efficient and effective, and to organise and manage a caseload.
- Critically evaluate the current healthcare focus on health promotion, enterprise, leadership and quality from a physiotherapy perspective, taking account of potential future developments and their impact on physiotherapy practice, locally, nationally and globally.
