Introduction
Welcome to Duke-NUS, Singapore’s flagship graduate-entry medical school.
Duke-NUS Medical School was established through a landmark collaboration between two world-class institutions: Duke University and the National University of Singapore (NUS), with the objective of providing innovative education and impactful research that enhance the practice of medicine in Singapore and beyond.
As a graduate-entry medical school, Duke-NUS attracts the brightest minds from a range of backgrounds, who bring with them significant academic and life experiences. Our MD curriculum is designed to provide an opportunity for our students to become outstanding clinicians and curious, critical thinkers who may also contribute to medicine as researchers, educators, leaders, entrepreneurs or policy makers. This is the basis of our “Clinician First, Clinician Plus” curriculum.
Along with our innovative educational programmes, we are a research powerhouse and our distinguished scientists are transforming the way we understand, diagnose and treat diseases. Our world-class signature research programmes are aligned to critical areas of public health needs in Singapore. These disease-focused, multi-disciplinary programmes have facilitated research discoveries that will improve the lives of patients in Singapore and around the world.
Our School benefits greatly from our strategic partnership with Singapore Health Services (SingHealth), which includes Singapore General Hospital, widely recognised as one of the top hospitals in the world. Through our SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre, we are able to leverage our joint capabilities and infrastructure to develop outstanding clinical education programmes and cutting-edge research collaborations that translate fundamental science into better health.
Whether you are considering studying, working or partnering Duke-NUS, I invite you to explore what we have to offer through our website and discover all of the great things that are happening here.
A US-Style Medical School in Singapore
Duke-NUS Medical School is Singapore’s only US-style graduate-entry medical school, drawing on the rich medical and research training of Duke UniversityOpen in new tab in North Carolina and outstanding resources at the National University of SingaporeOpen in new tab (NUS). Duke-NUS provides a critical learning environment that draws from the best of both universities to prepare doctors who can transform the practice of medicine and improve lives.
Improving the Practice of Medicine
Duke-NUS trains individuals who will gain the skills to both practice and improve the practice of medicine. Through the Doctor of Medicine (MD) programme, PhD programme, and MD/PhD track, Duke-NUS prepares doctors who will be well equipped to practice in the rapidly changing world of medicine, as well as play increasingly critical roles in translating meaningful scientific discoveries into quality innovations in patient care. To this end, the curriculum is designed for students to acquire and improve upon the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of any medical practitioner: in professionalism and ethics, medical knowledge, communication skills, and through clinical experience. Complementing these are the skills necessary to improve medical practice. These we believe to be research, teamwork, leadership, and creative and critical thinking skills, as demonstrated below.
Strong Partnerships
Duke-NUS resides on the main campus of the largest healthcare group in the country, Singapore Health Services (SingHealth). This group collectively delivers multi-disciplinary care among 42 clinical specialties across a large network of hospitals, national specialty centres, and polyclinics. Through our collaborations with the SingHealth Group, Singapore’s largest healthcare organization, Duke-NUS plays an integral role in building a vibrant healthcare community and advancing academic medicine.
Apart from SingHealth institutions such as National Cancer Centre Singapore, National Heart Centre Singapore, Singapore National Eye Centre, and National Neurosciences Institute, Duke-NUS also collaborates with research institutions at the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
Integrated Clinical Care, Teaching and Research
Duke-NUS and SingHealth have embarked on an ambitious Academic Medicine partnership, which strives to embody the tripartite of patient care, education, and research. To achieve this vision, two institutes have been established:
- 1. Academic Medicine Education Institute (AMEI)
- Aims to create a vibrant learning environment
- Assists faculty to be outstanding educators and education scholars
- 2. Academic Medicine Research Institute (AMRI)
- Aims to enable research-oriented careers for Duke-NUS/SingHealth faculty to achieve excellence in innovative translational, clinical, and health services research
Duke University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to award undergraduate and graduate degrees. Duke-NUS is not accredited by the Commission on Colleges and the accreditation of Duke University does not extend to or include Duke-NUS or its students.
