Pre-Med Studies at EMU

Time and again, EMU pre-med graduates report discovering they are better prepared than their counterparts in graduate school. In fact, over the past decade, over 80% of students who completed EMU’s pre-medical program were accepted into med school. EMU graduates credit our small class sizes, professors who nurtured them as individuals, and an environment that fostered personal growth and reflection about values, in addition to academic rigor.

Hands-on learning and research collaboration

EMU’s cadaver dissection program is one example of ‘academic rigor’ that accounts for exceptional preparation for graduate school.

EMU is one of the few colleges in the state that offers a cadaver lab for undergraduate study and research. Hands-on original research alongside faculty members provides further preparation that puts EMU graduates ahead of many peers in graduate school.... [-]

Unlike a traditional allopathic doctor, osteopathic doctors are trained in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and have a holistic approach to training. Requirements beyond core classes include BIOL 320: Vertebrate Physiology, BIOL 322: Advanced Genetics, CHEM 336: Biochemistry, and CHEM 208: Analytical Chemistry.... [-]

Students who wish to become physicians can meet the necessary pre-professional required courses through this program. Medical school requires four years of post-college study leading to the M.D. degree. Depending on the type of medical specialty the student wishes to pursue, an additional two to seven years of residency are required before the physician can be licensed to practice medicine. Medical schools give preference to students who have completed four years with a baccalaureate degree. Most students wishing to apply to medical school major in biology with a minor in chemistry due to the pre-requisite college course requirements for admission to medical school.... [-]

Bachelor in Pre-Medicine

Students who are interested in going to medical school (allopathic or osteopathic) typically major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry. As these majors include both the required courses for entrance into medical schools as well as additional coursework that will help prepare students for medical programs and for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). However, other degrees can also prepare students for health professions; thus students are encouraged to major in the field where they excel and should consult a Pre-Health Professions advisor about coursework.

Members of the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics and the Department of Biology offer guidance to students and write recommendations through our Pre-Health Professional Committee (PHPC) composed of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and physics faculty.... [-]
