Students who pursue pre-med coursework are training for their further education in the medical field. In addition to a focus on scientific studies such as biology and organic chemistry, this area of study generally lays the groundwork for many different careers in medicine.
Spanning 23 countries, North America is continent filled with educational opportunity. Students have the opportunity to learn multiple languages and develop an understanding of vastly different cultures.

Pre-Med Studies at EMU
Time and again, EMU pre-med graduates report discovering they are better prepared than their counterparts in graduate school. In fact, over the past decade, over 80% of students who completed EMU’s pre-medical program were accepted into med school. EMU graduates credit our small class sizes, professors who nurtured them as individuals, and an environment that fostered personal growth and reflection about values, in addition to academic rigor.
Hands-on learning and research collaboration
EMU’s cadaver dissection program is one example of ‘academic rigor’ that accounts for exceptional preparation for graduate school.
EMU is one of the few colleges in the state that offers a cadaver lab for undergraduate study and research. Hands-on original research alongside faculty members provides further preparation that puts EMU graduates ahead of many peers in graduate school....

Pre-med students may choose majors from all disciplines, from sciences to arts to languages, fostering pursuit of individual academic interests and qualification for medical school admission.
Typical pre-med students at Daemen College major in a Biochemistry pre-professional track. This major includes all of the courses required for acceptance into medical schools and provides students with a strong scientific background leading to success in their professional programs.
Students majoring in the Biochemistry pre-professional major are required to complete a two-year research experience. Students work with their Natural Science faculty mentor for two years and write a senior thesis based on their research.
Study abroad experiences are also encouraged to enhance their global and cultural awareness.
Service learning is required for all majors at Daemen College which is congruent to the mission of many medical schools.
Students meeting the academic requirements have guaranteed admittance to Nova Southeastern University of Osteopathic Medicine.

About the Pre-Medicine Program
Drury University has excellent programs for students interested in allopathic medicine (M.D.) and osteopathic medicine (D.O.). Both types of medical schools require applicants to take the MCAT.
The time required to graduate from medical school is the same. Both types of medical students are eligible for the same internships and residencies. Unlike a traditional allopathic doctor, osteopathic doctors are trained in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and have a holistic approach to training. Requirements beyond core classes include BIOL 320: Vertebrate Physiology, BIOL 322: Advanced Genetics, CHEM 336: Biochemistry, and CHEM 208: Analytical Chemistry....

Bachelor in Pre-Medical
The Department of Biological Sciences at Murray State University offers a four-year program leading to the Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree in biology with an option in pre-medicine. Students who wish to become physicians can meet the necessary pre-professional required courses through this program. Medical school requires four years of post-college study leading to the M.D. degree. Depending on the type of medical specialty the student wishes to pursue, an additional two to seven years of residency are required before the physician can be licensed to practice medicine. Medical schools give preference to students who have completed four years with a baccalaureate degree. Most students wishing to apply to medical school major in biology with a minor in chemistry due to the pre-requisite college course requirements for admission to medical school....

Bachelor in Pre-Medicine
Students who are interested in going to medical school (allopathic or osteopathic) typically major in biology, chemistry or biochemistry. As these majors include both the required courses for entrance into medical schools as well as additional coursework that will help prepare students for medical programs and for the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). However, other degrees can also prepare students for health professions; thus students are encouraged to major in the field where they excel and should consult a Pre-Health Professions advisor about coursework.
Members of the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics and the Department of Biology offer guidance to students and write recommendations through our Pre-Health Professional Committee (PHPC) composed of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and physics faculty....
