What are pre-med in medical studies? Courses in a pre-med program are designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to care for the sick. During the course of their studies, students may obtain an in-depth knowledge of human anatomy, microbiology, biology, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, cell physiology, genetics, human pathology and much more. Students often take several lab courses in which they gain hands-on experience with dissection and surgical operation.

Because of how intensive the program is, pre-med graduates tend to gain numerous desirable traits, including discipline, self-starter attitudes and strong communication skills. Each of these abilities is interdisciplinary and may help them succeed in all facets of life.

The cost of a pre-med program varies from school to school. Factors that may affect the total cost of education include location, duration of program and living expenses.

Individuals who successfully complete a pre-med program may qualify for an MD program or residency with a local health organization. Career options for those who have completed just the pre-med may include work as a nurse, lab tech, patient services representative, lab assistance or mechanical engineer. Some graduates may go into research and development, medical device development or other industries linked indirectly to the field of healthcare.

Many schools offer pre-med programs, but where a student ultimately ends up depends on his or her location, budget and time constraints.
