Objectives

The postgraduate program in Biomedical Engineering aims at instructing students with a basic engineering degree, on state of the art knowledge and techniques in the growing field of Biomedical Engineering. It aims at introducing the students to the basic concepts, methods, and tools in both the disciplines of medical information technology and biomechanics/biomaterials. It aims at bringing the students to a level of knowledge, understanding, and experience that is needed to actively conduct research and develop medical devices and associated software. To this end, the student will have to learn to interact with medical professionals and take into account the stringent regulatory framework.

As a postgraduate program, it is assumed that the students entering this program have already acquired the general skills and attitudes typical of engineering curricula. These skills and attitudes will be strengthened in the program. More, in particular, teamworking skills in an interdisciplinary environment and information processing skills in the same environment (medical, engineering, regulatory) will be reinforced.

Learning outcomes for the program

Knowledge:

The graduate student has acquired a good understanding of the concepts, methods, tools, and applications of:

  • biomedical engineering devices
  • biomechanical and biomaterial applications (orthopedics, dentistry, rehabilitation devices, cardiovascular implants, etc.)
  • medical information technology (medical image processing, biosignal analysis, sensor technology, hospital information systems, etc.)

The graduate student has obtained an introduction to regulatory affairs.

Skills:

The graduate student has refined his problem-solving skills, is familiar with the day to day practice of biomedical device design and has sharpened his critical research attitude in a research-centered environment.

He/she is able to read the international scientific literature, to write a scientific paper and to give a scientific presentation.

Attitudes:

The key competencies that will be addressed in the program will focus on the active processing of the knowledge by the students and on a training in the state of the art techniques in the field.

Hence, the graduate student will have a multidisciplinary attitude and will be trained to function in a fast-changing context.
