Postgraduate Certificate in Advancing Healthcare Practice

This postgraduate certificate course equips you with the knowledge, skills, personal, professional and inter-professional insights and qualities needed to function as a successful change agent in the advancement of healthcare, whether that be through leadership, policy and practice innovation work, or through research, evidence utilisation and practice skill development. You have a choice of modules which enables you to give your studies either an emphasis on leadership, policy and innovation or on skill analysis, research and evidence evaluation. Either option will equip you to make a significant difference in healthcare practice.

To achieve the Postgraduate Certificate in Advancing Healthcare Practice you will need to successfully complete either Leading healthcare improvements (K827) or Researching and evaluating healthcare practice (K828). K827 provides an exceptional introduction to change agency skills through leadership, while K828 provides a clear introduction to change agency as secured through practice skill analysis, research and evidence evaluation. Either of these 60-credit modules will enable you to gain a postgraduate certificate and if you then continue your studies by taking the second module you can achieve the postgraduate diploma. You can also study a further 60-credit module to gain an MSc.

The staged qualifications – a postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and MSc – are each qualifications in their own right. You can step off at any point, or study the whole programme.

Both Leading healthcare improvements (K827) and Researching and evaluating healthcare practice (K828) will help you develop your study and reasoning skills; advance your knowledge, understanding, personal, professional and inter-professional insights; and help you become a successful agent for change. You’ll also be better placed to seize career opportunities associated with leadership, quality assurance and practice development roles in healthcare. Irrespective of whether you have a front line clinical practice role, or one associated with management, research, or healthcare education, these qualifications have much to offer the entrepreneurial professional.

In the postgraduate certificate modules you conduct your studies with a keen appreciation of practice context, the work that you and your colleagues do. Your study group however will draw students from many different healthcare disciplines so that there is excellent opportunity to advance your understanding of inter-professional practice.

You conduct your studies using a mixture of online and print-based study materials and while continuing to work in your place of practice. You can telephone and email your tutor and will be invited to join a series of telephone tutorials to help support your studies. Tutors associated with this qualification are successful change agents who are eager to share their experience with you.

Career impact

The postgraduate certificate is valuable to all healthcare professionals wishing to materially improve their and others' practice and to help sustain a successful service during times of significant change. Both K827 and K828 facilitate the development of insights and skills necessary for those who manage, mentor, supervise, teach or role model practice to others. K827 is the priority choice for practitioners wishing to advance their credentials as a healthcare manager, policy developer or practice development officer while K828 is the right choice for those who wish to progress within the fields of evidence based practice, skills analysis and training or as professionals who lead in evidence review and quality assurance.

Entry requirements

You are expected to be a registered healthcare professional and to have:

  • a bachelors degree in a relevant subject
  • access to a practice environment that can be clinical or based in education, management or research. Access may be on the basis of part-time work, we do not assume that you are a full time professional. This qualification is not suitable though for those currently taking a career break or on extended period of leave
  • current professional registration with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the General Dental Council, the General Medical Council, the Health and Care Professions Council, or the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

If you do not hold a bachelors degree but have a track record of professional achievement (e.g. innovative practice, clinical leadership, research or publications, work in a healthcare charity but without professional registration), you may still be considered for non-standard entry. You will be required to provide documentary evidence of professional achievements and may be asked to complete an exploratory assignment answer in order to ascertain your ability to deal with masters level study and assessment. Exploratory assignments are used for admission assessment purposes, no fee is levied for their assessment but we cannot undertake to provide written feedback on these assignments.

Please note that you will need to spend approximately 11 hours per week studying for this qualification, and therefore you are strongly advised to study no more than this one 60-credit module in the same year.

You must complete this qualification within four years.
