After completing a master’s degree, some students choose to obtain the highest collegiate degree. A Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) focuses on knowledge that students need for writing, researching and teaching. This type of degree often takes eight years to complete.
What is a PhD in Physiotherapy? A PhD in Physiotherapy focuses on the science behind physical rehabilitation. Students in this program attend lectures, conferences and classes that focus on evidence-based methods of physiotherapy. Because this type of program is preparing students for a wide range of fields, they also do research and write papers to showcase their own findings regarding physiotherapy. At the end of the program, a student will typically be able to diagnose and treat physical impairments as well as educate future physiotherapists, patients or their families.
Taking this course is beneficial because students gain an intimate knowledge of exercises, motivation techniques, education methods, advocacy tools and equipment uses. A PhD in Physiotherapy can relate to sports medicine, geriatrics, pediatrics, orthopedics, cardiopulmonary and many other areas of medicine.
There are many different schools that offer this type of degree. Because of that, the cost varies greatly. It depends on the school, the country that the school is in and even if you are taking the course online or on campus, so you should always contact your school directly for this information.
With a PhD in Physiotherapy, you can gain a leadership role in physical therapy positions. You can also join research teams to develop new treatments or teach at a college level. You can work as a private physiotherapist, take on a not-for-profit role or work in the public sector. Once you have this degree, you have to decide if you would rather do research, teach or work with patients because you will have the opportunity to do it all.
Applying for the program is easy. Search for your program below and contact directly the admission office of the school of your choice by filling in the lead form.
