Earning a PhD, or Doctor of Philosophy degree, is one of the highest honors known. These degrees show that a student has devoted a lot of study, research and time to his or her field. PhD students are often at the center of new ideas and breakthroughs in their field while they learn new things as well.

What is a PhD in Immunology? Immunology is the study of the body’s immune system and function. In an Immunology program, PhD candidates may study cell structure, genetics, bioinformatics, molecular biology and the fundamentals of the immune system. In addition, many programs expect students to begin reading professional publications of current studies in immunology. Eventually, students usually begin preparing for their own research project or dissertation in this field.

Individuals who receive a PhD in Immunology become part of a fascinating field and learn about how bodies fight disease. Program graduates also get access to unique, exciting and high paying positions with their advanced degree.

The cost of a PhD program in immunology may differ based on many different things. Where the university is based, the length of the program and financial aid options may affect the final cost of this degree.

With this prestigious degree, a new graduate can expect to launch a career in lab research. Immunologists can work in labs to investigate and work on advancements in diseases, such as cancer. Another option is to work in the lab research of virology, which is the study of viruses, and to work on fighting the ones that threaten public health. Some students go on to help develop new and more effective vaccines during their research career.
