This programme aims at an in-depth education in the translation of basic knowledge within molecular biosciences into applications regarding the prevention, diagnostics and therapy of human diseases. The Faculty of Medicine has a long tradition and is further expanding its programmes towards such research goals. The establishment of a PhD programme in molecular medicine represents only the most recent effort of this kind. Established research focuses are represented by clinical and basic neurosciences, as well as research on the molecular basis of cardiovascular diseases. In addition, current efforts focus on cancer research, in particular the molecular regulatory processes pertaining to cancer as well as development and stem cell biology. Other major research topics include biochemistry, in particular intracellular compartmentalization and protein modifications, as well as infectious diseases and immunology. Cutting edge technology platforms are exemplified by facilities for transcriptome and proteome analysis; animal models including Drosophila, Xenopus, and rodents; life confocal microscopy; high content screening of cell morphology by automated microscopy and fluorescence activated cell sorting; and in vivo imaging.The programme provides PhD students with teaching experience in these disciplines and technologies. Best PhD Degrees in Germany 2017. Description of Study Program In this international study program, students holding a Bachelor’s degree can achieve a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) within 18 months. After a three-year doctoral program, the title Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) or Dr. rer. nat. respectively can be earned. Alternatively, after successful completion of both their medical studies and the Ph.D. study program, medical students may apply for the degree of a “Medical Doctor – Doctor of Philosophy” (MD-Ph.D.). Due to the lack of a semester structure, the integration of different subjects into a consistently structured curriculum, and the possibility to directly change to the doctoral program without writing a Master’s thesis, the duration of study is shortened. All courses are held in English. The study program is divided into two segments. The first year comprises 36 weeks of lectures, tutorials, seminars, methods courses, and individually supervised research projects.
