Admissions Requirements Applicants to the Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM) degree program must meet the following requirements: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from an ACAOM accredited institution, or its equivalent. All pre-admission courses must be completed with no less than a 2.5 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. International students must have course work that has been verified by an educational evaluation service for equivalency to the SBU Master’s degree Program. If prerequisite educational requirements were earned at a recognized and approved foreign educational institution, applicant’s official transcript must be evaluated by an agency which is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Each applicant must demonstrate English language proficiency as stated in the English Language Requirements. Applicants without acupuncture licensure require an approval of the Academic Dean and Doctoral Program Director. Foreign students enrolling in the Chinese or Korean Language Programs are required to provide a minimum score of 45 on TOEFL iBT which also requires a minimum speaking exam score of 18 and a minimum listening exam score of 15 prior to entering the clerkship training. Each student will have a specialist thesis supervisor from GUCM Students will propose the topic of their thesis and conduct a literature review. The second and third years will be mainly devoted to textual, clinical or laboratory-based research on the basis of which the thesis/dissertation will be written. Students may conduct their research in Ireland (or other neighbouring European countries if appropriate) at clinical or research establishments approved by GUCM. Alternatively they may go to Guangzhou, if they wish, during the second year and/or third year and conduct their research there. All Students will defend their thesis in Guangzhou at the end of the final year. The course will be taught in English. (On some occasions it may be taught in Chinese with English translation.) All technical TCM terminology is taught in Chinese Pinyin. Taught Courses The exact taught courses which a student will undertake will be dependent on their TCM specialism. As the Doctoral Degree in Chinese Medicine is specifically designed for those who are already qualified and practising in the field of TCM, the applicant must normally already be trained in their specialist Chinese Medical field. Thus: Those wishing to choose Acupuncture Moxibustion as their specialism will need to be fully trained professionals of Acupuncture TCM with a Masters Degree or Masters Degree -equivalent in the subject. Those wishing to chose Medical Qigong as their specialism will need to have a relevant scientific, medical or TCM-related degree with skills in Medical Qigong equivalent to, or similar to the Post-graduate Certificate in MQG. Those wishing to chose Chinese Herbal Medicine as their specialism will need to have a relevant TCM, scientific, medical or Chinese Herbal Medicine degree with clinical skills and under-pinning knowledge of Chinese Herbal Medicine equivalent to at least the first year of the Post-graduate Diploma in CHM. Emphasis in on understanding the foundations of the medicine represented by classical texts, and the maturation of those theories into their modern form, so as to achieve original thought regarding the future evolution of Oriental medicine theory. Track 3: Chinese Medical Chinese Language 1-6 (1.5 credits each) This track enables the post-graduate doctoral fellow to understand the basic features of the literary language of Chinese medicine and its relationship to the language of various classical periods and the modern vernacular of China. The aim of this track is to develop a broader intellectual perspective in Chinese medicine through exposure to the philosophical and cultural foundations of the medicine in its source language. Excerpts from source texts of Chinese medicine are translated to expand knowledge base and enhance research abilities to continue self-directed learning and contribute to the profession by way of translation and commentary. Pacific College has designed an online pathway for PCOM MSAc and MSTOM alumni to upgrade to the entry-level Doctor of Acupuncture (DAc) or Doctor of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (DAOM). PCOM master’s alumni, in large part, already meet the requirements for a doctorate, but do need some additional training in these areas to establish equivalency to the entry-level doctorate. These are the required additional courses: Evidence-informed practice Systems-based medicine Collaborative care Advanced integrative diagnostics Practice-based learning Who Can Apply? I’m currently in the MSAc/MSTOM program. If I take the additional 15 credits of the DAc/DAOM (EL) program now, will I have completed the DAc/DAOM (EL)? If you are a Pacific College MSAc/MSTOM student near the end of your program, you should meet with your advisor to discuss the upgrade plan. If you are a master’s student with more than one year to complete at another school, you are eligible to transfer to Pacific College to earn your MSAc/MSTOM, after which you could enter the DAc/DAOM (EL) upgrade path. Is the DAc/DAOM (EL) for alumni and faculty available to all PCOM MSAc/MSTOM alumni and faculty, even though the program is at PCOM-San Diego? Yes, the program and all the courses are available to all qualified PCOM MSAc/MSTOM alumni and qualified faculty, regardless of the campus from which they graduated. If I did not attend Pacific College, how and when can I enroll at Pacific College for the DAc/DAOM (EL)? At this time, you must hold either a PCOM MSAc or MSTOM to qualify for the DAc/DAOM (EL) upgrade path. However, for graduates of other schools, Pacific College’s post-graduate DAOM (PG) is a rewarding doctoral program focused on integrative medicine, Chinese classics, Chinese language, clinical specialization, and the development of a capstone research project. When is the DAc/DAOM (EL) going to be offered to non-Pacific College alumni? The Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (CCAOM) has developed a task force to recommend standards for this program. These standards will then be passed to ACAOM for consideration. Because space is limited, what happens if an applicant does not get into the term for which they apply? Will the application and fee roll over to the next term? Will the tuition remain the same for subsequent terms? If an applicant is not admitted for the term for which they applied, the application and fee will be rolled over to the next term. The admissions committee will notify all accepted and wait-listed students as soon as possible of the term for which they have been accepted. Fees and tuition are subject to change. Admissions Requirements What is the process for admissions decisions? Normally, an application is due two months prior to the start of the desired term. However, applicants may submit an application at any time and may be accepted on a space available basis. What are the program prerequisites? If I entered the MSAc/MSTOM with between 60 and 90 units, what are my options for preparing for the DAOM/DAc (EL) program? The following are the entry-level DAc/DAOM pre- and co-requisites: 90 semester units of previous undergraduate coursework, a general psychology course, and a general chemistry course (co-requisite). General biology is also a requirement but credit is given for the biology taken in your master’s. If you have not completed the above or need more credits to total 90, you should contact a student advisor for information about the many convenient options available to earn more undergraduate credits. Some options require no additional coursework or class time. All alumni who entered before Fall 1996 must transfer, take, or test out of Treatment of Orthopedic Disorders, Clinical Science 1, and Clinical Science 2. All alumni who entered the program before Fall 1993 should see a student advisor. What qualifies as a general chemistry or psychology course to meet the prerequisite requirement? Do the survey of biochemical principles/biochemistry and clinical counseling courses from the PCOM MSAc/MSTOM program apply? No, the survey of biochemical principles/biochemistry and clinical counseling courses courses from the PCOM MSAc/MSTOM programs do not apply. To show completion of general chemistry and psychology courses, there are three options: Submit an official transcript showing the completion of a general or introductory psychology course at the undergraduate level from a school that is accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. It is the responsibility of the applicant to contact the educational institution at which they completed this course and have them send an official transcript to Pacific College, San Diego. Transcripts previously submitted for admission to the MSAc/MSTOM program will not be considered for the DAc/DAOM (EL). A new transcript will need to be ordered. Submit official documentation of successful completion of the College Level Examination Program (CLEP)’s Introductory Chemistry and Psychology exams. Scores of 50 are required for successful completion, in accordance with the American Council on Education (ACE). Register for general/introductory chemistry and psychology courses at your local PCOM campus, if available. Once completed, request that the registrar’s department (if not completed at the SD campus) send the transcripts to the SD registrar’s department. Will transfer credit be available for any of these courses? No, these are unique courses to fulfill the competencies required for the DAc/DAOM (EL) degree. Do official transcripts from Pacific College (New York, Chicago, or San Diego campus) need to be ordered as proof of MSAc/MSTOM degree completion and coursework? No. Pacific College – San Diego campus’ admissions staff will acquire PCOM official transcripts from the respective registrars. Is state licensure a prerequisite to either doctoral program? No. Value and Benefits of Degree and Courses What is the value of a DAc/DAOM (EL) as a credential when the LAc is the industry standard? An entry-level doctorate demonstrates the highest level of licensure-qualifying training in the profession. The entry-level doctorate adds evidence-informed practice, advanced integrative diagnosis, inter-professional communication, practice-based learning, and healthcare systems training to the previous master’s level training. These are important skills and knowledge for acupuncturists to possess in today’s team-based medical model. The doctoral title and degree will provide the licensed acupuncturist well-deserved recognition and respect from their biomedical peers. All other factors being equal, we believe integrative medical settings will prioritize hiring doctors of acupuncture. Medical doctors, and other allied health providers may be more likely to refer to a doctor of acupuncture. While licensed acupuncturist is a common descriptor in our field today, it is a license title, not a degree. We believe that as colleges award many new DAc or DAOM degrees, doctor of acupuncture will become the most common way to refer to an acupuncturist. When considering an entry-level doctorate, remember that regional accreditation is the gold standard of accreditation and degrees from such institutions carry tremendous respect and credibility.
