Program Description

Biomechanics is an interdisciplinary scientific discipline, which, based on a detailed knowledge of anatomy and the biochemistry of relevant processes, deals with the mechanical structure and behavior of living systems and their mutual mechanical interactions.

The main theoretical aim is the formulation of generally valid rules, both at the cellular and organic level, as well as at the human, individual level. The biophysical and engineering methodological approach for solving tasks is supported by high-level knowledge of the biological character. The research takes place at various distinct levels ranging from micro-biomechanics (cellular level) to living macro systems (e.g. biomechanics of humans). It is possible to encounter biomechanic applications in a wide range of sciences and professional activities.

Biomechanics in this form can be used not only in the area of basic research but also in a wide range of professional activities such as rehabilitation medicine, ergonomics, forensic and biomedicine engineering, sports, etc. The training center of the Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic provides interdisciplinary education in the Ph.D. degree study programs in a broad scope and within particular specializations. Students' curricula are highly individualized according to the demands of the chosen issue and specialization. During the studies, great emphasis is placed on students' independent research activity within the context of the teamwork of the training center.

Experimental facilities include laboratories of particular training workplaces. Students' publications appear in respected scientific magazines, and active participation in conferences is considered an integral part of Ph.D. degree studies.

Description of verification and evaluation criteria

  • Duly completed master’s study program, i.e. submission of a certified copy of the university diploma or the nostrification of university education, by 30 September 2019.
  • Submission of the application form including all relevant enclosures, i.e. CV, professional reference, payment receipt of the admission fee by 30 April 2019
  • Submission of the dissertation project by 30 April 2019
  • Successful completion of the exam, which is based on appropriate knowledge in the scientific field chosen.

Entrance exams take the form of an interview on the topic of the Ph.D. Thesis, demonstrating the technical skills of the applicant for the doctoral study program and the ability to work with specialized foreign literature. The project is assessed by the expert committee.

Conditions for admission

Admission to Doctoral studies is conditioned by successful completion of a Master's study program.

Readings are recommended by individual potential supervisors and are based on professional issues of the potential dissertation and the chosen particular discipline. The graduate of doctoral studies in Biomechanics is well prepared from a professional point of view.
