The Ph.D. Program in Optometry and Vision Science (PDOCV) aims at offering training based on scientific research in Optometry and Vision Sciences.
The PDOCV is the only doctoral program of the kind in Portugal. It was accredited in 2013 by the National Agency of Accreditation (A3es) and joined the offer at the Bachelor and Master level. This is a research-based learning project conducted by researchers internationally recognized in the scientific fields of the Programme. Research activities are developed in the Center of Physics of the University of Minho which is funded by the National Foundation for Research (FCT), the European Union and private companies operating in the area of vision care, ophthalmic instrumentation, optical companies and ophthalmological corporations.
The goal is to provide training to prepare professionals able to integrate multidisciplinary teams and to carry out internationally competitive research in the areas of clinical optometry, optometric instrumentation, contact lens practice, characterization of myopia and its evolution, low vision, color vision, among others. These areas are very important from an applied point of view because their results contribute directly to the improvement of the visual quality of the population. On the other hand, this type of training is adequate for a high-level staff of companies in the area of vision, in the development activities of products and services, because their performance depends on the deep understanding of the problems and action mechanisms similar to those involved in scientific research.
