About

All over the world, in both high-income countries as well as low-income countries, there is a tremendous need for expertise in health economics. Health economists study and analyze not only how resources are used and how this affects health, but also how resources should be used so as to ensure maximum health benefits. So far, most health economists have worked with healthcare systems, but the need for expertise in health economics is increasing in public health workers and public health policies.

Expertise in health economics is also valuable with organizational and system changes, or with analyses of health and medical care systems.

In order to be able to work with these issues, knowledge of theories and methods both within health economics and within public health is needed – how one studies the health of the population and its developments. Those fulfilling the entry requirements to apply are those with basic public health from Umeå University or from another university/higher education institution.... [-]

About

The Master's Program in Public Health includes a number of courses on global health conditions, on health systems analysis, on the relations between social conditions and health and on the methods that you need to carry out public health work. The program provides public health practitioners and researchers with the skills required to understand, and ultimately help improve and maintain the health status of the population.

By nature, Public Health is multidisciplinary, drawing on social sciences and medicine, using qualitative and quantitative methods to identify and assess specific health risks before designing and implementing effective public health strategies. Traditionally drawing on the fields of microbiology, entomology, parasitology and the management and control of infectious diseases, in today's globalized world we are increasingly facing new public health challenges involving causation and prevention of chronic diseases.... Master's Program - Infection Biology

In-depth knowledge of infection biology is needed in work to improve health. There is a growing demand for expertise in this field, particularly in the developing world, where microbial infections are more prevalent, often with devastating consequences.

This program, in collaboration with Uppsala University, focuses on the biological and chemical processes behind the etiology, epidemiology, and evolution of microbial infections, as well as ways of predicting, preventing, tracking and treating infectious diseases.

Content

First-year studies concern the world of microbes and aim to give advanced knowledge of the biological and chemical processes regulating host-pathogen interactions. This knowledge will constitute the basis for more applied topics such as the biology of infectious diseases, how to control infections by antimicrobial therapies and natural immunity and how to understand microbial evolution.... Have you ever wondered where the word gut feeling comes from, or why stress induces abdominal discomfort? If so, this Master's programme may be of interest to you.

Nutritional Molecular Medicine and Bioinformatics is a two-year international Master's programme using problem-based learning (PBL) and designed to offer students scientific knowledge and competence to understand the complex bidirectional signalling between the gut and the brain. It focuses on in-depth knowledge on how diet and nutrition, the intestinal microbes, the intestine and the brain interact, as well as: i) how this is related to aberrant function of the gut and the brain, ii) how this relates to clinical practice, and iii) how this can be elucidated by state-of-the-art clinical and experimental research. The programme also provides you with an understanding of: i) how cellular processes relate to organ functions, ii) how the (patho)physiology of gut-brain interactions relates to nutritional, microbiological, gastroenterological and neurobiological aspects (with a human and clinical perspective), and iii) how bioinformatics can be an important tool to reach that understanding. This knowledge is essential for the development of new strategies to diagnose, prevent and treat the often debilitating disorders related to gut and brain function.... [-]

The international Master's programme Innate Immunity in Health and Disease leads to a Degree of Master in Medical Sciences and will give you in-depth knowledge in microbiology, cell biology and molecular biology essential for understanding the function of the innate immune system. The Master's programme will prepare you for doctoral studies or for work with biomedical issues in the industry or in the healthcare system. The programme is offered in cooperation with national and international research groups.

The programme is concerned with questions in relation to the function of the innate immune system. You will learn more about how the innate immune system detects and eliminates pathogenic microorganisms, infection strategies for different species of virus and bacteria and the cellular and molecular mechanisms behind inflammatory responses. The programme will give you knowledge and skills to use advanced scientific methodology and you will be trained to design, perform and interpret laboratory research in the area of inflammation and infection medicine.... The programme is organised as a two-year problem-based learning (PBL) study programme and is coordinated by the Cardiovascular Research Centre at Örebro University in close cooperation with other research groups in Europe.

The programme is concerned with the understanding of cellular and molecular mechanisms related to the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases. In focus are new pharmacological and interventional therapies for future treatments of cardiovascular diseases. The goals are that the students shall acquire in-depth theoretical knowledge and excellent methodological skills including in vivo and in vitro models used to study cardiovascular disease. Part of the programme is linked with two other Master's programmes, each supported by the three strong research environments in medicine at Örebro University. The joint courses will provide a broader insight into general aspects influencing public health in society today as well as research methodology and design. All courses are taught in English.... [-]
