During the first year the student is introduced to the work field of care and technology. During one year there are 6 campus weeks which will be in the Netherlands, Finland or Portugal. All other lessons can be followed via video conference. The student is guided in the use of several methods that support "User centered design" and "development". During the whole course the student will work on a self-chosen subject that is of great importance for the professional work environment. In the first year knowledge will be gained on "user orientation", "business" and "innovation". A start is made in the preparation of a R&D proposal to address the students chosen subject during the phase of master thesis preparation. The practical assignments of this year have relevance for the work environment of the student. Knowledge and skills development will be stimulated by incorporating the work environment in the learning activities the student will perform. "The programme concludes with the defence of a master thesis." In the second year the emphasis of knowledge and tool development will lie on aspects of "implementation". Strategies and methods will be demonstrated and used during group assignments on different subjects. Again the own work environment is incorporated herein. This will allow fine-tuning of the R&D proposal. In the second half of this year this R&D research plan will be executed which leads to the master thesis. The programme concludes with the defence of a master thesis. During the whole master programme students will interact not only with fellow students of different origin but will also work on subjects that have direct relevance for their own work environment. Additionally, through visiting the different participating institutions during campus weeks, you will encounter the cultural differences in Europe in the area of health and technology. The result of the master thesis research will have direct relevance for the work environment. Objectives During the master course you have gained actual knowledge on the developments in Technology and care at a European level. This will allow you to follow future developments and translate these to your professional work. You have built experience using different Research and Development strategies that allow you to incorporate technology in business development for applications in the care domain. You have learned to work together with professionals of other disciplines on mutual subjects. You have started to build your own professional network of colleagues with a similar ambition and drive. This network allows you to initiate future co-operate activities. Expert in care and technology The theme of the EU Master Care and Technology is: Link insight in human functioning to knowledge of technological developments in an innovative and scientific approach using strategies of co-creation to develop new approaches in - long term - care. Once a student has reached that aim and has integrated all these different aspects in the own functioning, a level of "Expert in Care and Technology" is reached. Competences that need to be achieved during the master are built across the steps of the "product innovation cycle" as a guide to the learning activities. Being an expert in care and technology allows you to address new challenges that are addressed to your organization. The Master in Care and Technology course is intended for students with a bachelor degree in either care or technology. One image tells more than a thousand words It is not surprising that in biomedical sciences traditionally illustrations are created to enable communication between scientist and author, teacher and student, or physician and patient. Art and science come together in scientific illustration. Your future expertise When you graduate, you are a specialist who makes accurate visualisations of topics from the clinical, medical and biological domain. You have the skills to use a wide range of traditional and digital visualisation techniques. Best of two top universities The Master Scientific Illustration is an international study programme in which you will meet students from European countries and beyond. Unique in Europe. The teaching programme Training in technical skills Your training has a strong emphasis on the application of conventional imaging techniques in conjunction with photography, video and computer techniques for accurate two-dimensional display of three-dimensional structures. Additional training in digital three-dimensional reconstruction and modelling is given in workshops. You acquire a broad theoretical basis as well as practical experience in working with medical techniques such as dissection, processing of microscopic and macroscopic serial sections and working with medical imaging techniques such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Becoming a scientific storyteller To be able to create a scientifically correct image, you must not only be a good craftsman, but also an outstanding 'storyteller' and communicator. You must be capable of communicating with specialists from different scientific fields, understanding the scientific problem and then be able to convert it into visualisation for a specific target audience. Creating images for patient education requires a different approach than creating images for a group of medical specialists. For this reason you will not only be trained in anatomy and medical nomenclature but you’ll also be guided in the field of communication. Furthermore, by means of practical assignments (including illustrating a surgical procedure) you will build up experience in making abstractions and schematisations of the reality to create an image that tells the scientific story in the best possible way. The themes The teaching programme is build up in three themes: Man Animal Human and Animal Surgery Each of the themes consists of three to five components and each component involves one or more assignments, which deal with various aspects of scientific illustration and in which various traditional visualisation techniques are practised and applied. The assignments are graded in terms of complexity, leading up to the level required for professional practice. Final examination and graduation The programme ends with a final examination, consisting of two components: A graduation project in which you write, illustrate and design a publication. An oral examination. In addition, you exhibit your work in a graduation exhibition and you compose a portfolio of your representative artworks you produced during the programme. The publication and the portfolio serve as masterpiece that helps you to find work in a professional practice. Small teaching staff A small team of dedicated professionals, who all have their own specialism (like scientific and medical illustration, anatomy, software, facial reconstruction etc.), will train you. Input from their work experience and their involvement in issues from the professional practice keep the programme up-to-date, educationally justified and closely connected to this professional practice. They all regularly publish imagery, contribute to congresses and take part in the debate about the profession of scientific and medical illustration. External professional experts contribute as guest speakers in lectures, workshops and in the final graduation projects. A preselection based on a home assignment and your digital portfolio. 2. A motivation interview and evaluation of your portfolio. 3. A practical assignment. Brain disorders, in particular neurodegenerative diseases and mental illnesses, are among the most prevalent and debilitating diseases of our time. They are typically caused by the interplay of environmental factors and genetic variation in multiple genes, which is currently being mapped by major international initiatives. Future brain research should therefore focus on integrative projects as a next step in characterizing this complex environmental/genetic interplay and in revealing how it translates into brain function and/or disease. To succeed, we need a new generation of neuroscientists capable of integrating information from genes and proteins to synapses, and from networks up to complex brain function and dysfunction. The Research Master’s Human Movement Sciences: Sport, Exercise & Health (research) is a two-year full-time programme that teaches you how human movement works and how performance can be improved. The multidisciplinary programme stretches from molecular biology to cognitive neuroscience and human motor behaviour. Teaching and research go hand in hand: the vast majority of our lecturers are researchers at the interdisciplinary research institute MOVE, which is a collaboration between the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences, VU Medical Center, and ACTA (dentistry).

In the Master’s programme in Health Sciences, you will learn to analyse the various complex factors that ontribute to health. You will go beyond individual health issues to tackle health problems in different ways. Obesity can be tackled through medication or stomach reduction procedures. Health scientists, however, look at other methods such as increasing taxes on fatty foods, reducing the amount of sweets and soft drinks children can buy at school, designing residential areas so that there are places for children to play and educating people about healthy eating and exercise.
