The growing international recognition and demand for doctors with generalist expertise who can provide effective and coordinated inter-professional patient care across specialist disciplines, prompted the University of Newcastle to introduce the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management). As the number of patients with multiple conditions increases globally, the University of Newcastle, in partnership with the New South Wales Ministry of Health and the New South Wales Health Education Training Institute (HETI) have collaborated to develop this unique and exciting program that blends clinical medicine with health leadership and management. The program has been designed to train doctors to be clinical leaders with a broad perspective on patient care and hospital management and is open to both domestic and international applicants. Providing you with an up-to-date education in clinical medicine, leadership and management, you will be prepared with the skills and knowledge to take on senior generalist hospital positions and inter-professional team leadership roles across the full range of health care facilities. Comprised of eight core courses undertaken part-time over two years, the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management) is delivered within an experiential and applied framework. The course is led, coordinated and delivered by a range of practicing health service clinical leaders and the University of Newcastle’s Faculty of Health and Medicine academics, including world-wide renowned medical leader, Professor Kichu Nair. If you are a senior clinician looking to extend your responsibilities into clinical leadership and management; a clinician in the early stages of your career looking to develop and manage patients across the health system; or you are a doctor interested in providing and improving clinical care in hospitals, this masters program could be for you. To be eligible to study the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management), you will need to: be currently registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA); have worked for a minimum of two years full-time in a clinical setting following the completion of your medical degree; and have English language skills at the appropriate level Career Pathways The Master of Clinical Education (Leadership and Management) at the University of Newcastle is an experience based program designed to develop doctors in hospitals to be clinical leaders with a broad perspective on patient care and hospital management. The advanced clinical leadership and management skills you will learn through this carefully designed program will provide you with the expertise required for senior generalist positions. The role of a generalist requires you to be an effective communicator and clinical care coordinator across independent clinical disciplines, filling the gaps that exist in current hospital processes. You may also transfer these skills to a range of other roles including: department or unit director; director of prevocational training; quality improvement and system redesign; clinical governance; director of research; and education. Specialisations The University of Newcastle has developed the program, in collaboration with the NSW Ministry of Health and the NSW Health Education and Training Insitute to provide continuing education for doctors working in hospitals and to open new career pathways as a senior generalist. Studying eight prescribed courses over two years part-time, the program prepares doctors within the hospital medical workforce to be clinical leaders with a ‘generalist’ perspective. You will learn the appropriate knowledge, professional skills and attitudes to be an effective communicator and provide appropriate hospital-wide interprofessional clinical leadership. Throughout the program you will learn to evaluate, assess and develop clinical competence, learn the economics and governance of the health care system and develop superior management and leadership skills to manage interprofessional teams and system redesign. You will learn audit, safety and quality improvement tools for clinical practice; and techniques required to enhance the safety and quality of health care services. The Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management) will help to deepen your understanding of complex clinical care, extend your professional networks and teach you to embrace personal reflection and ongoing learning. Program Convenor, Professor Kichu Nair brings experience and insight to the program with an established reputation as the Director of the Centre for Medical Professional Development, Hunter New England Health in Newcastle, Australia. Working with real life scenarios, applying your learned clinical leadership and management skills, you will be prepared to appropriately and effectively manage challenging situations in a team and as a leader whilst maintaining appropriate care for the patient. Admission Requirements hold a degree which qualifies them to practice medicine; show evidence of current registration to work as a medical practitioner; and provide evidence of completion of internship and at least one further year of clinical experience, equating to at least 2 years postgraduate medical experience. Minimum English Language Proficiency Requirements Applicants who do not speak English as a first language must demonstrate that they meet the University's English proficiency requirement.
