The MECS aims at providing, to bachelors or masters in health or in natural sciences, research skills to conduct investigation in health sciences. The 1st curricular year (60 ECTS) is dedicated to learning theoretical fundamentals of various areas in health sciences and to acquire laboratory and research competencies. At the end of the 1st year, the student prepares the proposal for the thesis project to be developed in the 2nd curricular year.
At the end of the MECS, the student should have gained autonomy in planning experimental research and in interpreting data.
The masters’ degree in health sciences is flexible in its curricular training offer in order to allow the addition, in each year, of modules on distinct emerging areas. The curricular component of the study plan includes compulsory and optional modules, in a total of 60 ECTS, coordinated by faculty members of the ECS-UM, ICVS researchers and faculty/researchers invited from other national or foreign institutions. The optional modules are, in each year, selected from those available in the advanced annual training program of the ECS/ICVS or from other, national or foreign institutions, focusing specifically on topics like bioinformatics, development, infectious diseases, endocrinology, epidemiology, immunology, neuroscience, oncology, public health, advanced laboratory and clinical techniques.
Taking the opportunity to design an innovative course of study, and aligned with the new pedagogical training trends, the ECS-UM defined a pedagogical strategy that is based on an integrated study plan, centered both on active pedagogical methodologies and student-centered, that emphasizes the development of integral formation, but also customized, where the value of the generation of new knowledge is central and explicit.
