Master of Science in Human Development and Family Studies emphasis on Gerontology

Texas Tech University's online Master of Science in Human Development and Family Studies is made possible through a consortium of universities called the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GPIDEA). Several universities have come together to offer online post-baccalaureate programs to students whose families or careers have prevented them from completing a degree on campus. The consortium agreement allows students to take courses offered by multiple institutions for a standard tuition in order to complete a program.

Program Overview

  • 36 credit hours
  • Although students can take courses from multiple institutions, the degree-granting institution is responsible for placing students for practicum and internship credits.
  • Coursework is completed online.
  • Students are not required to enroll in a certain number of courses each semester, so completion time varies by individual.

Application Process

Although there is no application deadline, potential students are encouraged to submit all application materials at least three months prior to projected initial enrollment. Applications for this program are evaluated on an ongoing basis.

1. Apply to Texas Tech University's Graduate School.

  • Complete the Graduate Admissions Application.
    • $60 initial application fee or $50 for each subsequent application (including changes of entry date, add/change program requests, or readmission requests).
    • Students planning to pursue a master's degree must submit Graduate Records Exam (GRE) scores to the Graduate School. Scores must be less than five years old at the time of application.
    • International students must also submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score to the Graduate School. Scores must be less than two years old at the time of application.

2. Contact the Graduate Advisor to determine additional application materials that may be required by the department.

3. Review the Tuition and Fees Guidelines.

  • A common tuition rate is set by the Great Plains IDEA Board of Directors. The tuition rate is $530 per credit hour for graduate courses and $380 per credit hour for undergraduate courses. In-state and out-of-state tuition rates do not apply.

4. Apply for financial aid and/or scholarships.

  • Financial aid is distributed based on full-time enrollment and several other eligibility requirements. Your enrolled hours as of the 12th day of class in the fall and spring semesters determines your enrollment status for the semester, and financial aid is disbursed accordingly. Attending less than full-time could mean a reduction in aid.

5. Check your admissions status. Texas Tech University will notify you of your admissions status by updating the Applications tab in your Raiderlink.
