Master of Outdoor Education

Outdoor Education courses in the School of Health Sciences aim to provide essential knowledge, practical skills and leadership qualities to individuals who want to teach in schools or Outdoor Education centers. Professionals in this field need to have the skills to design appropriate, needs-based and enjoyable programs to which clients are committed. They need to blend practical outdoor skills, evaluate needs, design, and plan and implement safe Outdoor Education programs.

The philosophical approach of the Master of Outdoor Education program at Notre Dame includes a strong commitment to best practice in achieving a healthy lifestyle through physical activity and its relationship with the outdoors. Students will gain experiences in a range of outdoor activities as determined by accreditation in the National Outdoor Leadership Registration Scheme (NOLRS).

Mode of Study & Assessment

The program is available in part-time or full-time mode.

Most units are offered in block, intensive mode throughout the year covering some weekends, and blocks in the April, July and October school holidays.

The assessment of competency in each unit consists of tutorial performance, a number of assignments or projects during the semester and a final examination.

Admission Requirements

The graduate programs in Outdoor Education are designed specifically for teachers who want to develop their professional training in Outdoor Education. Qualified teachers from any specialty can apply for the graduate program. Teachers will become qualified senior teachers in Outdoor Education to lead the outdoor education programs within schools and to teach post compulsory Outdoor Education Studies. Some students may wish to work with individuals in community based adventure programs and as part of adventure tourism ventures for all ages.

Those without education qualifications would need to complete a one-year postgraduate Diploma in Education to become qualified for Health and Physical Education teaching if they choose to do so at the end of their couse.

The course is designed to provide advanced standing on application.
