Master of Clinical Medicine in Leadership and Management
The growing international recognition and popularity of the general hospital doctor known as a ‘hospitalist’ has prompted the University of Newcastle to introduce the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management).
The University and the NSW Ministry of Health have collaborated to develop this new program aimed at improving the quality of care in hospitals, as the number of patients with multiple co-morbidities are on the rise.
Providing you with an up-to-date education in clinical medicine, leadership, and management, you will be prepared with the skills and knowledge to take on senior hospitalist positions in Health facilities.
Comprised of eight core courses undertaken part-time over two years, the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management) is delivered within an experiential framework. The course is led and coordinated by a range of health service clinical leaders and the University of Newcastle’s Faculty of Health and Medicine academics.

The Master of Clinical Education (Leadership and Management) at the University of Newcastle is an experience-based program designed to develop doctors in hospitals to be clinical leaders with a broad perspective on patient care and hospital management.
The advanced clinical leadership and management skills you will learn through this carefully designed program will provide you with the expertise required for senior generalist positions. The role of a generalist requires you to be an effective communicator and clinical care coordinator across independent clinical disciplines, filling the gaps that exist in current hospital processes.
You may also transfer these skills to a range of other roles including:
- department or unit director;
- director of prevocational training;
- quality improvement and system redesign;
- clinical governance;
