Introduction
The Biomedical Sciences programme trains highly skilled scientists who are able to conduct research in a wide biomedical field and supervise such research in academic, clinical or industrial settings.
In this specialisation, you study relevant infectious and tropical diseases, gaining practical insights into the interaction between ecology and the disease.
The focus of this programme is on research.
You will spend half of your study time on practical research while doing internships and on writing a dissertation. Collaboration between the Institute for Tropical Medicine and the university laboratories provides you with the unique opportunity to participate in high-level research on HIV, malaria and other infectious and imported diseases.
In addition, you are offered the opportunity to study abroad for part of the programme.
Why choose UAntwerp?
Through its unique collaboration with the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), the University of Antwerp is able to offer you a state-of-the-art Master’s degree. Courses and research are organised over 4 semesters. During the second semester, you will gain practical research skills in the Integrated Research Practica. The project proposal and the Master’s research project and thesis last 7 months and offer you the opportunity to participate in research projects in leading laboratories and institutes. In completing the research projects, you will gain practical experience in scientific research and learn to analyse data, write reports and give oral presentations.
Some graduates have been selected for prestigious PhD programmes at leading institutions in Europe and the US. About 25% of graduates find PhD positions at one of the participating research institutes in Antwerp.
