Educational aims The overall aim of the qualification is to develop knowledge and understanding, cognitive skills, key skills and practical and professional skills in the study of medicinal chemistry, with particular emphasis on molecular aspects and development of drugs. The Department of Health's Competence and Curriculum Framework for the Physician Assistant (now Physician Associate) defines the Physician Associate as: …a new healthcare professional who, while not a doctor, works to the medical model, with the attitudes, skills and knowledge base to deliver holistic care and treatment within the general medical and/or general practice team under defined levels of supervision. Physician Associates (PAs) are part of a new and growing profession within the NHS. PAs work alongside doctors in hospitals and GP surgeries to provide safe and quality care to patients. PAs, under supervision of doctors, may obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, carry out diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, request and interpret test results, diagnose illnesses and develop treatment and management plans. The Physician Associate MSc programme includes over 1,800 hours of professional practice and will fully prepare you to practise in a wide variety of specialties and settings. Currently PAs work in General Practice, Emergency Medicine, and multiple Adult Medical and Surgical specialties. Successful completion of the Physician Associate MSc programme provides eligibility to sit for the Physician Associate National Examination and join the Managed Voluntary Register. Course Content Our Physician Associate Master's course is an exciting and innovative modular programme, delivered full-time over two years. Applicants should be aware that the programme is delivered over a period 45 weeks in Year 1 and 48 weeks in Year 2. In addition the course is intense, with significant contact hours. Students should expect to be studying on campus from 9am - 6pm five days a week. All students must be ready to assume responsibility for their own learning. Clinical placements will start in the first term of Year 1 with weekly one-day GP placements. In Year 2 the majority of time will be spent on clinical placement in various practice settings. You should broadly expect to adopt the working patterns of the supervising clinician (clinical educator). Generally, you are expected to complete 42 weeks of clinical experience. You should expect to be working roughly a 40-hour week whilst on placement. The function of the brain is the result of an extremely complex integration of signaling units: neurons. In order to understand the role of neurons in health and disease, it is essential to understand the fundamental mechanisms underlying neuronal function. With the progress made in genetics in recent years, it has become a great ambition to understand what all these genes are doing in neuronal systems. A basic understanding of molecular principles holds the key towards unique treatment paradigms for psychiatric and neurological diseases such as schizophrenia and Parkinson’s. The Master’s track in Molecular Neurosciences provides a training platform for students who have the ambition to play a major role in looking for solutions for the diseases of today and tomorrow. Goals The goals of the track are to: provide an essential theoretical framework in molecular neurosciences; prepare the student to be a critical researcher; prepare the student to work independently in a molecular neuroscience lab; prepare the student to report on his/her results in written and spoken form; train the student in the research process: research question> design experiment> interpret results> define following research question(s); train the student in applying for research funding. Programme outline Courses The track starts with a mandatory course of three months covering several topics: Development and specification of neuronal systems; Signaling pathways in neuronal systems; Stem-cell fate and cortical genesis. Each topic includes one week of full-time practical work. These practical assignments include the use of state of the art techniques such as in-utero and ex-vivo gene transfer in the brain and FACS. At the end of the course, students will be given a theoretical assignment to integrate theory and practice. It is possible to combine this Master's programme with a different major or additional courses (at the UvA or other universities). Internships & thesis After the core course, an initial internship is planned for about 40 ECTS. At the end of the year, a student symposium is held where the data of the internships will be presented and discussed with colleagues and supervisors. In the second year, a second internship will be planned with the goal to go abroad. Alongside this internship, a second optional course can be taken in order to obtain a formal certificate in animal work.
