What causes a disease? What can be done about obesity and type 2 diabetes? Why does one person become depressed and another does not? What are the underlying mechanisms of disease and what is the role of the brain?

During the Master's degree programme in Biomedical Sciences, you will be trained to find answers to these questions. The programme is strongly oriented towards the scientific background of health and disease and preclinical research. You will encounter an interdisciplinary environment of basic scientific research at the faculty of science and engineering and the more medical oriented environment of the university medical centre.

You study life processes, and their abnormalities, in the intact organism. The field in Groningen is wide and the choice is up to you: you can specialize in molecular biology or conduct research at the level of population groups. You are participating actively in all aspects of the research, from designing an experiment to conducting it to writing an international scientific publication. Within the degree programme, Biomedical Sciences students can follow the specialisation Biology of Ageing which provides training as a researcher mainly in the field of ageing and age-related pathologies.... ABOUT

The Master in Molecular and Cellular Life Sciences (MCLS) is research-oriented and takes a multidisciplinary approach to study related to health and disease in cells and organisms. By the end of the program, you will gain sufficient fundamental knowledge to start working on applications in the field of medical and biotechnological issues. These applications may include the development of new medicines and vaccines, new strategies for crop improvement, or the development of enzymes to be used in industry.

THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU?

MCLS is the ideal Master’s program if you are interested in molecules as the basis of life and disease and if you want to know how chemistry, biology, biomedical sciences, and physics contribute to our understanding of how these molecules work. The interplay of molecules in cells and organisms is the central focus of the program.... [-]

About

Do you have a clear and specific interest in cancer, stem cells or developmental biology? Join our program and combine research in oncology, molecular developmental biology, and genetics. Discover the mysteries of embryonic growth, stem cells, signaling, gene regulation, evolution, and development as they relate to health and disease.

Contribute to a Better Understanding of Disease Treatment and Prevention

Given that fundamental developmental processes are so often impacted by the disease, an understanding of these processes is vital to the better understanding of disease treatment and prevention. Adult physiology is regulated by developmental genes and mechanisms which, if deregulated, may result in pathological conditions.... [-]

About

Biology of Disease positions you at the cutting edge of basic and clinical science, in particular in the cardiovascular research field. You study disease mechanisms in the broadest sense, and learn to conduct (cardiovascular) disease-related translational research in cooperation with clinical and pre-clinical staff.

Learn to translate a disease into a scientifically sound experiment or model or the other way around. Expand your knowledge concerning the disease or build bridges towards therapeutic leads by studying underlying mechanisms of the disease. Our various research projects focus on different subjects and diseases, allowing you to gain experience in multiple labs.

The human body is ingeniously constructed. But sometimes the system goes wrong. Then the cells of the nervous system give out wrong messages, the immune system fails or there is rampant cell growth. In the Radboud University Master's programme Medical Biology you will explore the biological mechanisms of health and sickness. Our programme is unique because it is a combination of fundamental research and the translation of its findings into clinical applications. This is facilitated by our close cooperation with the University Medical Centre.

Cells organise and rule our bodies. Disturbances in cellular processes can lead to serious disorders such as metabolism and immune diseases, heart and circulation problems, cancer, and the diseases that come with age. The Nijmegen Centre for Molecular Life Sciences (NCMLS) plays a leading role in the fight against these diseases. This research institute engages in a continual exchange of knowledge and expertise between clinic and research laboratory. This is possible thanks to close cooperation with the nearby University Medical Centre. As a student in the Research Master’s programme Molecular Mechanisms of Disease, you will find yourself in a dynamic research environment – one in which every new theoretical insight may be the key to a new medicine or better diagnosis and treatment....
