The MSc in Surgical and Interventional Sciences has the approval of the Royal Colleges of Surgery. The MSc is designed for surgical trainees to improve their level of scientific appreciation by exposing them to scientific principles and methods. The programme is suitable for both surgical and dental trainees and is primarily intended to provide scientific research experience prior to or as part of the surgical training programme.
A medical qualification from a UK university or an overseas qualification of equivalent standard. Applicants may have clinical experience, but this is not essential.

About this degree
Students gain skills in the verbal and written communication of science, together with an in-depth understanding of science-based subjects of clinical relevance. Students also undertake an in-depth scientific research project (50% of final mark) and gain an appreciation of scientific research which further trains them to appraise the current scientific literature/evidence and experimental design, practice and analysis.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The Microsurgery course at Northwick Park Institute for Medical Research (NPIMR), established in 1979, is an integral part of the institute’s multidisciplinary training and education programme. The MSc course module was established in 2013 and is designed as an introduction to vascular microsurgery incorporating many of the exercises from the full microsurgery course. All students undertake an independent research project on a subject of relevance to their clinical interests which culminates in a dissertation of 18,000 words and contributes 50% of the final mark. We encourage students to submit their work for presentation at conferences and for publication.
Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials. Student performance is assessed through unseen written examination papers, written reports, oral presentations, written coursework and oral examinations, and a dissertation and oral examination for the research project.
Recent graduates have become junior surgeons in surgical training while the majority of experienced graduates have become consultants in specialist surgical fields, generally throughout the UK and abroad.
