Experimental Internal Medicine
The track Experimental Internal Medicine is a collaborative effort by the University of Amsterdam (UvA) Faculty of Science and the Academic Medical Centre (AMC). Internationally renowned AMC research groups engaged in modern clinical and translational research have put together challenging courses. These courses provide the participants with a thorough background on modern, state-of-the-art research in the experimental internal medicine.
The first course is Molecular Biology of the Cell. Students will be given training in the analysis of chemical structures, structure function relationships and innovative, genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metabolomics-based measuring systems.
The second course is Cardiovascular diseases. The basic and clinical aspects of three large clinical cardiological syndromes will be discussed in detail. These include: cardiac pump function and heart failure, cardiac excitation and sudden cardiac death, vascular pathology and ischemic heart disease. Attention will be paid to the most current state of scientific insights in these three areas, the clinical expression of diseases therein, and to the experimental techniques, and animal models to unravel the biological underpinnings of normal and diseased states.
The third course is Endocrinology. The endocrinological aspects of three large clinical areas will be discussed in detail. These include: stress, reproduction & growth, and metabolism. Attention will be paid to the most current state of endocrinological insights in these areas, clinical expression of diseases therein, and to the experimental techniques, and animal models to unravel the biological underpinnings of normal and diseased states.
In both courses the teachers are highly active in the field. Either as a senior investigator or a medical doctor or both.
The remainder of the programme provides elective courses and major practical training, whereby students carry out research projects. The AMC offers research opportunities in a virtually every specialism, with special emphasis on Internal Medicine. These include, nephrology, pulmonology, infectious diseases, cardiology, vascular medicine, gastro-intestinal diseases and hepatology. Generally we advise to do the first traineeship at the Science faculty's Swammerdam Institute of Life Sciences (SILS) to get a proper grip on the necessary experimental approaches.
Is Experimental Internal Medicine the track for me?
The programme is looking for students who:
- are interested in diseases of internal organs and human functioning at the molecular and cellular level in the maintenance of health and development of disease.
- have a keen interest on the physiology and pathophysiology of major diseases.
- want to cover topics ranging from the embryology of organs to the tertiary prevention of serious diseases in those organs
- enjoy doing laboratorial experiments,
- are enthousiastic, creative and accurate
Four out of five graduates of the Medical Biology programme find a job within a year of obtaining their Master's degree. Approximately half continue on in the field of research as PhD students or as researchers in industry, hospitals or institutes. Other graduates find work in education as a secondary school teachers or information officers in medical NGOs. About ten percent of graduates become policy makers in areas such as government, pharmaceutical business or medical organisations.
Specific entry requirements
Applicants for the MSc in Medical Biology must hold a Dutch Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences or Neuroscience.
Higher professional education level (HBO) Bachelor’s degree
The programme is also open - with certain restrictions - to students with a Bachelor's degree from a higher vocational training (HBO) programme in Biomedical Sciences or a related area.
Detailed knowledge of chapters 2-8 and 10-14 of "The Cell" (Aberts 5th Edition) is a pre-condition. This will be examined during the intake interview. The individual student's motivation is also a key consideration. There is no schakelprogramma (pre-Master programme) available.
