Brain disorders form a large and increasing burden for society and make up a large proportion of our healthcare budget. Advances in genetics have helped establish the fact that genetic make-up, in interaction with (early) environmental factors, is a major contributor to neurodevelopmental, psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. However still too little is known about their pathophysiological mechanisms, the biological substrate and the role of the environment early in life, and during adulthood in their onset. As a result, treatment options are often limited with frequent side effects.Some of the brain disorders that will be studied in great detail during the course will be depression, anxiety disorders, Alzheimer's disease, eating disorders, addiction and epilepsy.
The main aim of the track is to provide you with detailed and up-to-date information about:
1) the mechanisms underlying some of the main human brain disorders like Alzheimer's/Parkinsons's disease, depression, eating disorders, addiction, epilepsy, MS e.g.
2) the current animal models available to study these diseases and/or the effects of pharmaca.
3) how research into the development, validity, efficacy, safety, selection and testing of these drugs takes place. This is done with experts from pharma industry. The track further focuses on risk factors during early life, like stem cells, stress and nutrition.
The P&P track starts with a specialised course Advanced Psychopathology (12 ECTS) followed by an optional course in Experimental Neurobiology of Disease (12 ECTS). In June a second optional course is organised called: Early life related vulnerability to adult onset disorders; epigenetics (6 ECTS). Additionally, you may sign up for practical skills courses from the 3rd year of the Psychobiologie Bachelor's like Labvaardigheden (6 ECTS), Proefdierkunde (6 ECTS) and Signaalanalyse. Please note that the ECTS of Bachelor's courses are not valid for your Master's programme.
Master's thesis & research projects
During the Master's track every student writes a Master’s thesis (12 ECTS) and takes part in one or two research projects. The thesis can be organised on an individual basis, at any time of the year. Practical training takes place at the UvA, in any of the UvA related institutes (NIN, AMC) or abroad. In the second year students can choose to take on courses from the other tracks, or do an extended research project.
