This program spans 4 years and graduates are awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) jointly by Duke University and NUS. Duke-NUS is the first medical school in Southeast Asia to follow a Graduate Entry Medicine model, whereby all students are at a minimum required to have a bachelor’s degree. The school’s mission is aimed at producing outstanding leaders in medical research, education, and patient care. Its innovative program with a distinctive focus on research is modeled after the curriculum at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and adapted to the local learning environment and learner needs. The application to our program opens in April, and December 1st is the final deadline for each year. Particularly strong candidates are encouraged to apply by September 1 to be considered for early acceptance. Admissions requirements are the same for both the early and regular acceptance options. We select and accept candidates throughout the application period. Admissions decisions are made by the Duke-NUS Admissions Committee and are final. Admission to Duke-NUS is highly selective. The MD curriculum at Duke-NUS is rigorous and proven academic success is key for gaining admission to the program. Our Admissions Committee evaluates all applications based on a variety of criteria to enroll truly talented individuals. Service Commitment As the cost of medical education at Duke-NUS is subsidized by the Singapore Government, all graduates of its MD program or the MD/PhD track are required to fulfill a service commitment. If a bond is broken, liquidated damages – pro-rated according to the bond period not served – must be paid off to the government. The amount of liquidated damages is based on the government subsidy granted and the compound annual interest. According to MOH guidelines, the service commitment period is as follows: 4 years for Singapore citizens 5 years for international graduates and Singapore Permanent Residents The service commitment period excludes the first year of postgraduate (residency) training, commencing only after satisfactory completion of the first postgraduate training year. The service commitment is fulfilled in a public sector hospital/institution in Singapore as determined by the Ministry of Health (MOH). Assuming satisfactory completion of the first postgraduate training year, trainees can fulfill their service commitment during residency training in Singapore ; or alternatively, in an MOH-approved public sector research setting in lieu of further residency training.
