A doctorate program is an advanced degree that prepares students for challenging careers in specialized fields. Most programs take around six years to complete, although each specific program will have its own timeline and requirements.

What is a Doctor of Medicine? This program combines pre-clinical science subjects and clinical courses. Classes may include anatomy, physiology, medical chemistry, biophysics, cell biology, microbiology, pharmacology, radiology, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, internal medicine, infectious diseases, and oncology. Many curricula will also cover the legalities and ethics involved with practicing medicine. Most programs will also require that the students go through an internship or residency in order to become a medical doctor.

Students who go through the challenging medicine program will be rewarded with being eligible for medical jobs in many different areas. Along with a good job outlook, most medical doctors also receive a large salary compared to the average occupation.

The tuition and fees involved with earning a medical degree are often high, although it depends on the specific program. The location of the school, duration of the program, and fees related to a specialty are all factors in the total cost. Students should contact the school directly to find out what the financial obligations will be and if any fellowships, stipends, or scholarships are available.

Graduates can typically find a career in their area of interest. This may be as a pediatrician, emergency doctor, surgeon, obstetrician, internist, or family doctor. Daily duties may include both clinic appointments and hospital rounds, depending on the position. Additional career opportunities for graduates may include medical research, teaching, and medical administration. Individuals who want to help the less fortunate may want to join Doctors Without Borders, or a similar organization.

M.D.s in Doctor of Medicine. Doctor of Medicine Degree (M.D.) To graduate with a Doctor of Medicine Degree (M.D.), students must successfully complete the basic and clinical science programs and pass the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE) Step 1 and Step 2 CK & CS. Our vision is to have a boutique medical school for students who deserve and demand a quality education in a small school environment. Our faculty is highly credentialed and recruited primarily from the United States. They love to teach and dedicate virtually 100% of their time to students. The Basic Science Program, semesters 1–4, is located at our state-of-the-art campus on the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Kitts. Our traditional medical school curriculum compares with most U.S. medical schools. Students are tested in block format throughout the semester. Shelf examinations, which simulate mini USMLE-style examinations, are also integrated into the academic program. Pre-clinical exposure begins in the first semester and continues throughout the Basic Science Program. We invested more than $50 million dollars to develop one of the most modern campuses in the Caribbean that can compare to, or even exceed, that of most U.S. medical schools. Our wireless campus includes an 11,000 square-foot state-of-the-art anatomy building, a 24-bed virtual hospital equipped with more than 20 computerized human simulators, multiple classrooms and laboratories, an auditorium, and a large library and learning resource center with more than 50 computers for student use. All of our classrooms and laboratories are equipped with the latest audio-visual equipment to enhance the quality of education. The trend in the United States is to teach histology utilizing a database of digitized slides that correlates directly to a specially designed laboratory manual. At UMHS we have embraced this new technology. Students utilize the Bachus database of histological images that can be accessed and utilized in class, in the library/learning resource center, as well as at home through a web browser. Our anatomy lab is equipped with cutting-edge technology and is a model for U.S. schools to follow. We urge you to view the Campus section of our website for more details on all of our facilities. The Clinical Program, consisting of semesters 5–10, is completed at major teaching hospitals in the United States. The fifth semester, which includes a clinical correlations and board review component, is held at our Portland, Maine campus. In semester 5, our students have an opportunity to work one-on-one with a large number of highly qualified and credentialed physician preceptors. Students are prepared throughout the Basic Science Program as well as the fifth semester for USMLE Step 1. UMHS has established affiliations with a number of teaching hospitals in New York, Connecticut, Georgia, Ohio, Oklahoma, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, Puerto Rico, and Canada. In addition, we are continuing to expand the core clinical affiliations and are in negotiations with a significant number of teaching hospitals. [-]

Non Italian high school certificates must be translated and legalized by the Italian Consulate/ Italian Cultural Centre who gives the final Declaration of Validity of the title called Dichiarazione di Valore (DV). Without this document the University cannot accept enrolment even if the student has passed selection so, if you have any doubt, please verify you meet the requirements with your local Italian Diplomatic Authority. Lessons and Exam scheduling Here is some general information on lesson and exam organization to help you understand how the Academic Year is structured. The Academic year begins on the first days of October and ends on the 30th of September. In the first two years there is a distinction between lesson period and exam period and the academic year is organized in two semesters; The 1st semester begins in October and ends in January with the Christmas break in December. The month of February is entirely dedicated to exams (Winter exam session) The 2nd semester begins in March and ends in June. The months of July and September are dedicated to exams (Summer and Autumn exam session) The Summer break is in August when there is no academic activity going on within the University. Lessons normally begin at 9 am and end at 4 or 6 pm according to the different subjects and to possible laboratories or practical activities. Lunch break is from 1 to 2 pm. Full time attendance is requested. From the 3rd year the lessons are structured in ‘blocks’ which means that the students concentrate on one subject at a time, therefore the semester division and exam sessions are not so strictly defined as in the first 2 years. After each ‘block’ of lessons the students have a week’s study leave and then they sit for the exam before passing on to the next block. For each subject there can be up to 5 exam dates spread over and during the various exam sessions (for example, 2 in February, 2 in July and 1 in September). Some subjects may require mid-term exams as well. The Italian system of evaluation goes from 18 points to 30 cum laude, where 18 means pass and 30 cum laude corresponds to honours. [-]

M.D.s in Doctor of Medicine. MD Program Medical students earn the Doctor of Medicine degree in a general four-year program designed to be followed by graduate training in a specialty area. During the first two years of the program, students study the sciences basic to medicine—anatomy, behavioral science, biochemistry, microbiology, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology. Clinical correlations to basic material are emphasized, and professional skills are nurtured in a four-semester Introduction to Clinical Practice course continuum. The first of its kind in the country, the School of Medicine leads the way in integrating pioneering applications of ultrasound technology into all four years of medical school. In the third year medical students leave the classroom and enter the hospitals and clinics full-time for hands-on training under the close supervision of faculty. The final two years of the medical curriculum include required clinical clerkships in family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and surgery. There is also ample opportunity in the fourth year for elective courses, allowing the student flexibility and time to pursue individual interests. While most medical students complete their core clinical training at Columbia-area affiliated hospitals, an optional clinical clerkship program at the Greenville Hospital System is available. The M.D. program is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education of the American Medical Association and Association of American Medical Colleges. Class size for each of the four years is limited to 85 students. With this relatively small class size, a favorable faculty/student ratio, and varied hospital resources, the School of Medicine is able to offer the medical student personalized instruction and excellent patient contact opportunities. As a community-based medical school, the School of Medicine provides medical students with preceptorship opportunities in the offices of practicing physicians in the Columbia area. An innovative Rural Primary Care Education Project, in Winnsboro, SC, provides students with first-hand experience in rural practice. An active faculty research program keeps the medical education program up-to-date and reinforces training in the scientific approach to medicine. As part of our state's flagship state university, the School of Medicine also makes available to medical students all the benefits of a large university community, including contact with students and faculty in related disciplines and a variety of University cultural and recreational events.
