About the Medical School for International Health (MSIH)

The Medical School for International Health (MSIH) at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) is the first and only medical school in the world to incorporate global health components into all four years of the core M.D. curriculum. We offer an M.D. program that prepares you for a career going far beyond the hospital or private clinic. Gain the training necessary to practice medicine while meeting the challenges of global health — and make a real impact. With classes entirely in English, the M.D. program is taught by experienced physicians with personal involvement in global health.

Together we are dedicated to preparing a new generation of doctors who have a comprehensive view of health around the world — whether they practice medicine locally or internationally. Exciting Path to Residency With three years of study and training in Israel, fourth-year electives in North America and an eight-week global health clerkship at one of our sites around the world, our M.D. program is designed to provide an exciting path to residency in the United States, Canada and beyond. Match rates for MSIH graduates parallel match rates of top medical programs in the U.S., with more than 90% of students matching with one of their top residency choices over the past decade.

Teaching Methods

  1. Practical curriculum – in semester one students work in pairs and meet supervising Global Health physicians practicing in and around Beer Sheva. Students see their patient with their supervisor and follow up the patient (meeting their family and community). They discuss their experience with their supervisor and write up their patient’s story as a Global Health case report.
  2. Classroom sessions - 45-minute lectures in semester one introduces students to the diverse communities in and around Beer Sheva and teaches the knowledge and skills required to interview patients, families, and communities. Important topics in Global Health are introduced as the course continues, and in semester two we examine these topics through real cases. The topics of lectures timetabled are subject to change as this is a dynamic course that is continuously evaluated according to ongoing student feedback and the diverse learning environments students encounter. You will need your laptops and internet for all classroom sessions.
  3. Case-based learning – both practical work and lectures employ real cases to discuss and the origins, effects and potential solutions to Global Health problems.

How Will my M.D. Focus on Global Health?

Our program takes an integrated approach to global health and cross-cultural medicine. The curriculum provides a comprehensive education in medical sciences and clinical training, with focused global health coursework, concepts, issues, and practices throughout. As a student at MSIH, you’ll participate in an array of global health and medicine components, including:

  • Specific global health modules such as Tropical Diseases, Birth as a Human Rights Issue, Nutrition, Aging, Anatomy of Urban Health for the Poor and Underserved, HIV/AIDS, International Health Promotion, Migration and Health, Tuberculosis, Cardiovascular Disease in Developing Countries and other relevant topics
  • Clinical clerkships providing exposure to diverse patients from southern Israel’s Bedouin and Ethiopian communities, as well as immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East
  • Eight weeks in a global health rotation in diverse locations around the world, such as India, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Peru, Mexico and Ethiopia
  • A year-long course in clinical and global medicine that covers history, critical concepts, and practices and emerging issues in the field
  • Courses in epidemiology and anthropology that emphasize demographic and cultural issues
  • A course in biostatistics that develops the skills to write a high-quality research paper on topics relevant to global health issues
  • An interactive workshop that offers cross-cultural clinical communications skills and simulations

Global Health Clerkship

The Global Health (GH) Clerkship is an eight-week clinical capstone experience. This clinical rotation from mid-January to mid-March takes place ideally in a developing country or in other clinical settings related to global health all over the world. All clerkships must be authorized by MSIH, officially supervised by local faculty, and adhere to the standards set by MSIH. During the clerkship, students will prepare reports presenting interesting clinical cases and emphasizing issues relating to GH. This exposure allows MSIH students to apply the theories studied in the previous three and a half years about different cultural and ethnic groups while working under varied conditions affected by the economics, traditions, religious beliefs, limited resources and geography of the site. In so far as is possible, MSIH students are integrated with training programs for local medical students and participate in clinical work with local health practitioners. Interesting rotations are available based on the specific interests of the student and in accordance with the MSIH’s annual review of local security conditions and travel advisories, and subject to regulations of the U.S. Department of Education. (Please note: individual citizenship, visa status, financial resources and licensing issues can affect a student’s selection of a global health elective site.)
