Atlantic University School of Medicine

Four Year MD Program

Atlantic University School of Medicine offers an accelerated 4-year M.D. program for students who have completed a minimum of 90 semester credit hours of college level studies. This should include; one year of college level English, one year of college level Math, one year of Biology with a lab, one year of General Chemistry with a lab, one year of Physics with a lab, and one year of Organic Chemistry with a lab.

Students entering the medical program are required to spend four semesters at our main campus located in Saint Lucia, West Indies. The final semester of the basic medical sciences is completed at our affiliated teaching hospital in Chicago Illinois, followed by 72 weeks of required clinical clerkship training. All clerkships are done within accredited teaching hospitals.

The MD5 semester is taught by US medical school faculty and residency teaching faculty. The 8 week lecture review is a high yield focused review of the competencies and concepts tested on the USMLE Step 1. The 8 week ICM/PD focuses on the importance of doctor patient interaction, history and physical diagnostics as well as the authoring of both SOAP notes and daily progress reports throughout patient management. Students are asked to complete case studies and present these to the treatment team.

OSCE will be used as an educational and evaluative tool. Competency based learning objectives will be set and students will complete the course after demonstrating that they have achieved competency in both the didactic and clinical areas required for the safe practice of medicine.

Following the MD5 semester all students are expected to have achieved the required knowledge, skill and competence to participate in the AUSOM CS1 elective conducted at the same teaching hospital. The CS1 is the first of 6 clinical semesters required to earn the Doctor of Medicine degree. During this clinical elective student is guided through the development of skill related to the taking of appropriate, patient specific and yet complete history and physical examinations in the major specialties of clinical medicine. These areas include, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Ob/GYN, and Pediatrics.
