About the course

The HND Health and Social Care aims to give students a flexible learning experience, helping them to meaningfully consider the varied roles within the sector. The programme will draw from a breadth of professional and academic knowledge in the health studies area.

Some of your learning will take place in the new Bolton One building. The Clinical Simulation Suite in Bolton One is a simulated clinical environment complete with simulated patients. This allows the academic team at the University of Bolton to educate health professionals in a unique, realistic and dynamic way. In short, this ensures that our graduates are able to provide the highest standard of care for their patients.

  • Part of the HND teaching will use the clinical skills facilities at Bolton One, which will allow for the experiences of being in a clinical environment.

  • The second year of the programme includes a work placement, allowing for participation in a health and social care environment. This will be linked with an employability module.

What you will learn

A broad range of health and social care modules will be taught, which will enable either career progression within health and social care or further academic development.

What you will study

Communication and ICT; Principles of Health and Social Care; Using Research Evidence; Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care; Legal and Ethical Issues; Introduction to Social Policy; Work-based Experience; Employability Skills; Group Dynamics and Working in Teams; Planning Care Delivery; Social Inclusion, Empowerment and Health; Health Promotion and Opportunity.

Entry requirements

80 UCAS points from at least one A2-level (or equivalent) in any subjects.

You should also have four GCSEs at grade C or above (or equivalent) in any subjects.

If English is not your first language you will also normally need IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent). If you do not have the required English level, you can study English with us from IELTS 4.0 (or equivalent).

Some work placements (taken during Level HE5 of the course) involve regular unsupervised access to children and/or vulnerable adults, also known as regulated activity. If you will be undertaking a placement that involves regulated activity you will have to get an Enhanced Disclosure certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) beforehand. Charges are payable to cover the cost of the DBS Enhanced Disclosure application and annual registration with the online Update Service. You do not need to apply for DBS Enhanced Disclosure before starting the course.
