Survival Analysis

Survival data, or more generally, time-to-event data (where the “event” can be death, disease, recovery, relapse or another outcome), is frequently encountered in epidemiologic studies. Censoring is a problem characteristic of most survival data and requires special data analytic techniques. This online medical course will give an introduction to survival analysis and cover many of the types of survival data and analysis techniques regularly encountered in epidemiologic research. The necessary statistical theory will be presented, but the course will focus on practical examples, with an emphasis on matching data analysis to the research question at hand. Lab sessions will give students the opportunity to apply the theory to real datasets using the free statistical software R.... [-]

Advanced Topics in Causal Research

This online medical course will address two important topics in causal epidemiologic research, namely confounding and effect modification. These topics will be discussed in the context of both etiologic research and observational intervention research. Effect modification and confounding are difficult concepts to understand and often mixed up. In this course, the theory, as well as the practical side of these issues, will be discussed.

One particular problem in causal research is that the observed relation between a determinant and an outcome is attributed to that determinant, while in fact the observed relation should be attributed to another variable. This form of bias often referred to as confounding, is central in this course. Other sources of bias, notably missing data and measurement error are not addressed in detail.... [-]

Pharmacoepidemiology and Drug Safety

Pharmacoepidemiology and drug safety: a current issue

With the prospect that even more innovative drug therapies will be introduced in the coming years, society is demanding new approaches to comparative risk/benefit evaluation, as well as new concepts. Such evaluations are usually carried out only once the relevant therapies have been used widely in daily practice. The safety and risk management assessment of different drug therapies is then performed within the framework of observational epidemiological studies (e.g. to establish proof of 'safety' and proof of 'effectiveness'). This is the logical next step after randomized clinical trials, which are designed to provide evidence of a drug's 'efficacy'.... [-]

Systematic Reviews of Prognostic Research

The number of primary studies evaluating prognostic factors and models is rising per day. Alike for therapies and diagnostic tests, critically summarizing and analyzing the evidence form prognostic studies in a systematic review and meta-analysis is beneficial for healthcare professionals seeking the best evidence. Reviews of prognostic studies are much more challenging because of more variation in questions & designs, specific sources of bias & variation, and more complex statistical meta-analytical models.

Several advances regarding the design, critical appraisal and statistical analysis in systematic reviews of prognostic studies, have recently been made. In this online medical course for researchers, we discuss and practice how to define your review questions, how to search the literature, how to critically assess the methodological quality of primary prognostic studies, and which statistical methods to use for meta-analyses of the results of primary prognostic studies. The course consists of plenary presentations, small-group discussions, and computer exercises.... [-]

Research Ethics: an Introduction

Volunteers are often asked to take part in medical research in order to improve the health and well being of other people, now and in the future. However noble the aim, this raises many ethical questions. How can we ensure that participants give their genuinely informed consent? What should be provided to control groups during clinical trials? How can we weigh the risks and benefits of various studies? How can we ensure scientific integrity in research? When should we conduct research with vulnerable populations, such as children and people in low- and middle-income countries? How should we interpret the Tuskegee syphilis study from a historical perspective? There’s never a shortage of questions; it’s the answers that are harder to determine.... [-]

Prognostic Research

Prognosis is a key concept in patient care. However, although prognostic research is becoming increasingly important in clinical medicine, the actual methodology behind it is relatively underdeveloped.

The purpose of this course is to redress this imbalance. We will, therefore, discuss the principles and methods of non-experimental prognostic research, together with the practice of prognostic research in a clinical setting. The emphasis will be on learning about the design and statistical analysis of prognostic studies, the construction and estimation of prediction rules, the various approaches to validation, and the generalization of research results. You will also learn how to address the challenges of dealing with small data sets.... [-]

Applied Economic Modeling for the Veterinary Sciences

Economic modeling underpins decision-making in the entire field of animal health economics, so a good understanding of the issues and tools involved is vital. The aim of this hands-on course is to enable you to become familiar with using the relevant tools so that you can become more actively involved in economic decision-making, particularly with regard to disease control.

Many economic tools have been developed and are currently being applied to support decisions concerning animal health. These include basic methods such as partial budgeting, cost-benefit analysis, and decision analysis, but also more advanced methodologies such as linear programming, the Markov chain and Monte Carlo simulation. You will learn about all of these, together with how to detail the critical steps in a systems analysis and choose appropriate modeling types and techniques.... [-]

What are the key issues in the good governance of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) responses, including HIV? How can one negotiate the complex political and financial terrain when developing policies and strategic plans? Maternal health, family planning, adolescent health, abortion and HIV, and the policies and strategies that address these, are among the most internationalized and to some extent politicized of all health issues. In this blended course, that combines classroom sessions with e-learning, you identify SRHR related international agreements, development commitments, and financial mechanisms, and analyze how these influence national policies and plans and vice versa. You will perform an SRHR strategic policy review from a multi-stakeholder perspective, addressing governance and financing structures and their implications for planning and managing the responses....
