Prepare for undertaking an International Health Elective, in this course developed in collaboration with King's College London ... [+]

International health electives (IHEs) are highly variable, student-organized placements that offer important opportunities for student-directed learning about health and healthcare in unfamiliar contexts. They enable medical and healthcare students to take responsibility for their own learning and to explore areas of interest relevant to future careers.

However, there is evidence to suggest that international health electives do not always deliver the learning outcomes anticipated and that pre-elective learning can help to ensure a valuable and productive experience. This free online course, developed as a collaboration between King’s College London and St George’s, University of London, is aimed at learners currently studying in medical or healthcare disciplines and considering taking an IHE. On the course you will learn how you might avoid negative experiences and ensure that doing an IHE would be both valuable and productive, should you decide to undertake an elective yourself.... [-]

Find out how new drugs and treatments are assessed before being introduced. ... [+]

This course will help you understand how and why drugs and treatments are funded and discover how healthcare organizations make decisions about whether we should have access to certain treatments.

You will focus on a key part of the information used to make these decisions - Health Technology Assessment (HTA).

What topics will you cover?

In this course we looked at:

What health technology assessment is and how it is applied by healthcare decision-makers to inform the choices they make about which drugs and treatments should be made available to patients- this means looking at both the benefits or effects of the treatment, and its costs. The kinds of evidence that can help us to decide whether a treatment is of benefit, and how much of a benefit it gives. The range of evidence types, with a focus on clinical trials, what they can offer, their limitations and why they are particularly important for HTA. The methods used to bring the existing research and evidence about a treatment together, so we can get a clear picture of what benefits the treatment offers. To do this, we looked at a technique called ‘sytematic reviewing’ which combines the evidence into a single report and uses statistical techniques to bring the data from a number of studies together to create a single estimate of the effects of a treatment. The ways in which the costs of drugs and the economic impacts can be compared with those of existing treatments. To do this we... [-]

Why join the course?

Why is a quality improvement in health and social care systems so difficult? Why is it so challenging to bring in new and better ways of organizing health and social care services?

Many reasons have been put forward: lack of money; lack of appropriate or complete knowledge; excessive and perhaps unnecessary regulations; and entrenched professional opinions and interests.

This free online course suggests that the main reason is complexity. Health and social care systems are inherently complex, with many interconnected activities and processes, and thus difficult to measure, analyze, change and improve.
