The Human Medicine master programme builds on the Health Sciences bachelor degree. Besides offering the scientific training required to enter the medical profession, the programme is geared towards providing the skills needed by independent practitioners. The curriculum also supports development of the core competences of medical experts – professional conduct, interdisciplinary collaboration and communicative abilities – and other key qualities required for a medical career. On completing their degree, graduates receive the academic title of doctor of medicine (Dr.med.univ.). This wide-ranging programme provides students with comprehensive expertise. Courses include a strong practical element and students get to grips with concrete medical issues at an early stage. The emphasis is on health science topics in a range of disciplines. An additional focus on technology and economics means that graduates will have developed strong interdisciplinary communication and problem-solving skills, and excellent clinical abilities. As a result they are ideally placed to assume the responsibilities of decision-makers in an advanced health care system. The programme’s distinctive practical element comes courtesy of our close relations with a network of university hospitals comprising facilities in St Pölten, Krems and Tulln. The Biomedical Engineering, Health Economics/Health Care Management and Applied Clinical Science electives give prospective physicians the opportunity to carry out specialist research into these topics during their degree. Assessment At the end of the programme, students are required to write a master thesis. They begin working towards the thesis in the first semester, when they present a synopsis of a study project. Students obtain specific methodological expertise during elective courses, and use this know-how to draft a study protocol which serves as the basis for their master thesis. The electives, which students select from a range of modules, lay the groundwork for the master thesis. The elective subjects are: - Biomedical Engineering - Health Economics/Health Care Management - Applied Clinical Science Master thesis supervisors, in consultation with the degree programme director, may require students to attend a voluntary elective with a workload of 10 ECTS credits, if this is essential for meeting the methods-based and content-related requirements of the master thesis project. Students may also choose to take voluntary electives (especially in the Biomedical Technology elective) subject to the approval of their thesis supervisor and the degree programme director. Curriculum The Human Medicine master programme builds on the Health Sciences bachelor degree, and also has a modular structure, with the timing and contents of each module designed to meet the requirements of cross-disciplinary learning. These requirements play an integral part in courses offered throughout the various semesters, creating a link to clinical practice and promoting the development of clinical skills. The modules in years 1 and 2 enhance clinical abilities and proficiency by means of small-group learning. The specific health topics covered in each course focus on the problems which human medicine experts frequently encounter in day-to-day practice. Students receive practical clinical training in the course of a 48-week internship in the third year of the programme. Courses focus primarily on clinical practice, and case studies are used to illustrate theory-based course contents. Small-group bedside teaching approaches enable students to carry out detailed, problem-based and patient-centred analysis of specific cases, as well as promoting professional conduct and interdisciplinary working practices. The objective is to help students to develop suitable reflective and decision-making capabilities, stamina, a feeling for psychological well-being and a strong sense of responsibility. The focus is also on enhancing the skills required to form interpersonal relationships, to recognise, understand and handle group dynamics, to manage tasks and responsibilities, as well as to identify and deal sympathetically with borderline situations and uncertainty. This in turn supports the students’ interpersonal and professional socialisation. The Interdisciplinary Approaches course concentrates on health economics and biomedical engineering topics such as procedural due process, process and quality management, analysis and discussion of health and social policy issues, health care planning, institutional matters and ethical questions. The aim is to teach professional conduct as defined by the CanMEDS Roles. Career Perspectives Thanks to the highly integrated, interdisciplinary structure of the Human Medicine programme, students acquire a unique skills portfolio that enables them to pursue a medical career. As fully qualified medical experts, programme graduates have first-class medical abilities, excellent communication skills, and can adopt collaborative, interprofessional working practices. However, graduates can also act as managers, trainers, academics, and advocates on health-care issues.
